I recently started offering my cat higher quality, lower phosphorus canned food due to early signs of kidney disease. She does NOT like it. She wants fancy feast still. If I mix a little fancy feast with the new food, she'll eat a few bites. But that's it...I don't know what to do.

I've tried about 6 different lower phosphorus canned foods now.

I offer a small amount of Halo kibble that's low in phosphorus per Tanya's website. But I know it's not great to give too much since kitty needs hydration and dry food doesn't offer that. BUT at least my cat will actually eat the kibble.

What should I do???

You might ask your vet if it is okay to try a little Forta Flora sprinkled on food to make it more appetizing.  Or you could try sprinkling a little parmesan cheese or tuna juice over canned food.  Some people I know grind down kibble that is liked by kitty, then sprinkle over the canned food.  The thing is, she has to eat- so then ask your vet for a phosphorus binder to use with the Fancy Feast.

p.s. The pet store I buy from will give me one can of a new food at no charge- this is in case my kitties don't like a new food.

Don't force change too quickly. Your cat needs to eat, and if what she wants is fancy feast, there are worse things out there for sure. Its more important that she eats something than if she goes on a hunger strike. Try other foods, be patient.

It's important that she keeps eating enough to avoid other problems. You could try making the changeover more gradual, or even look at making your own food for her if she's really determined. Be sure to use a BALANCED recipie if you take that route though.

If she'll happily eat an appropriate dry food, then let her. You can always make up the fluid intake in other ways. It's definitely a better option than not eating enough to stay well.[article="31138"][/article][article="31801"][/article][article="30756"][/article]
