I have just adopted a new kitten. The foster parent I adopted her from said she has had her for 3 months trying to socialize her after finding her on the streets. She told me if you pick her up or come to her she loves to be petted but otherwise never comes to you first for love or petting and runs away. I am now on my second day of having her and she was right. She never comes directly to me or nudges me for attention she mostly just does her own thing and sometimes i will come to her amd pet her. Ive mostly been trying to not pet her and just let her come to me on her own terms but it worries me that the foster mom had her for so long and she still never came to her to be pet. Can anyone tell me if theres any hope of her ever coming to me when i call or coming to me for attention? She is 8 months by the way.
Thank you!

I usually advise letting the cat call the shots. In this case, it would appear she is just one of those cats who is pretty independent. If you want to pet her, fine, but she may never seek it out. We have six cats inside. Three seek attention, three could care less. Their personalities very, just like people.

I am thinking, though, that you could use bribes. Treats and bits of chicken will get her attention and get her to approach for a quick pet. Eventually, she may approach without the treats.

I am not a cat trainer by any means, so perhaps someone with more experience in that regard will chime in.

Thank you for adopting her!

Hi Chelsea,

I myself have just adopted a semi feral kitty. He was on the streets for 6 months. I am a newb to this myself, but my kitty is kind of similar. I have been using treats to train him to come to me and when I give it to him when he comes I pet him. I also sometimes pet him before I give him the treat. I also pet him during feeding time while he is eating, so he associates me petting him with good things happening ( food/treats). I have been giving him wet food, mixed with dry food. I think saying his name alot when talking to him, feeding him or in any regards is good too. As a helpful, constant sound to get used to hearing, he may associate it with him/herself. I also do the kiss, kiss sound everytime before a feed him, and sometimes when I do the sound he perks up and just looks at me now. So, sound association can help in many forms!

Jackson Galaxxy from "My Cat from Hell', the tv series has some helpful youtube videos on new cat stuff.

Also this video on getting a cat used to getting pick him was helpful to me so far.
Good luck! <3 Cat's who has been outside I am realizing take a while to gain their trust, but when you have those moments when they do, it's super rewarding.
