whether it's jello with fruit, instant pudding, or some wonderful baked item(s) -- i always have a dessert. this past summer i alternated between jello with fruit and instant pudding; much easier for me during my busy warm weather months. but now it's fall (and getting close to winter setting in here), and i'm feeling motivated to do some baking again. soon enough i'll start my Christmas baking too!

so with these thoughts on my mind, for today's Question of the Day.........

Let's talk about desserts!

What are some of your favorite desserts?  (can be for everyday desserts, or special occasion desserts; can be as simple as a piece of fruit, or as decadent as tiramisu or german sweet chocolate cake)

i'll start!

there are so many desserts that i enjoy, and very few that i really don't care for. i love fruit desserts, both fresh fruit and baked desserts using fruit. a couple of my favorite fruit desserts are apple crisp and banana bread. i also love peanut butter brownies and banana walnut blondies. i don't care for pecans, so i make a peanut pie instead of a pecan pie. a special occasion dessert for me would be making a 'from scratch' layer cake with frosting. i adore fresh blueberries and i love them baked in muffins and cakes, but strangely i don't like blueberry pie.

i don't 'do' anything with caffeine in it, so i don't 'do' chocolate or cocoa either.

how about you?

My MIL made the most delicious homemade angel food cakes.
Try as I might, mine don't even come close.

Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake with my whipped peanut butter frosting. There's something about a chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting that says "Comfort Food".

Pretty much any kind of pie will suit me. Except mincemeat.

The absolutely best, most delicious, just decadent dessert in the world? A layered white coconut cake with lots and lots of shredded coconut, a lemon curd filling, and white buttercream frosting. This is one of my desserts for Christmas dinner and it's not Christmas without it. I can make them and mine is really good. BUt there's a local restaurant/bakery that makes a divine white coconut cake and I always order from there for Christmas. I can taste it now.

I think as far as a general category pie is my favorite.  I would  be hard pressed to come up with one favorite, it really depends on what mood I am in which I like the best.  For me pecans are my favorite nuts and I love pecan pie.  I also like a good apple pie that hasn't been overly sweetened or overwhelmed with spice. and I love a tart lemon meringue pie.

I also love apple crisp made in the fall with fresh apples,

In the summer I love homemade ice cream.

I'll pick a good cookie over most any other dessert. Second in line is fruit pie, any kind of fruit or berry, or lemon or key lime. I love chocolate, but have to be in the mood for it. Brownies can be good if they have nuts in therm - I really love fruit and nuts in desserts. I'm not a fan of puddings or parfaits, baklava, or cake, with the big exception being cheesecake, but that's not really cake imo.

Cheesecake, especially turtle cheesecake or white chocolate. I also love pie (peach, blueberry, strawberry rhubarb, pecan).

Give me a yellow cake with chocolate frosting and I'm a happy camper.  I also love most pies, and chocolate chip cookies.  Strawberry Short Cake is another fave of mine and Rice Pudding too.  There are not many desserts I don't like.

I'm not a big dessert person. Not a cake fan, not a pie fan with the exception of a good key lime pie as long as it's frozen and there is no meringue on it. I hate that stuff. I do like cookies but with few exceptions (Oreos and Nutter Butter), I only like soft cookies and NO chocolate chip ones. So most of the time if I have dessert, it's good quality ice cream. I do like chocolate (good quality dark only) and I do like peanut butter but under NO circumstances should the 2 ever enter the same room, much less touch each other. I like brownies but they have to be fudgey brownies, not cakey ones.

Special occasion dessert? It depends on who I was eating with. I guess I'd make whatever they wanted but if it was just up to me, I'd probably skip it altogether and have a small snifter of Grand Marnier instead. Dessert doesn't excite me. I'm more of an appetizer girl. In a perfect world, the whole meal would be a buffet of really good appetizers and cocktails and the big main meal and dessert wouldn't even happen.

Desserts, nah, they are not my thing. I eat gluten free and if I get a dessert, I have to make it myself. Our local grocery sells a gluten free cheesecake sampler, but the slices are full of nuts and I have to avoid nuts. I got real hungry once for something sweet. I baked gluten free cookies and made myself a banana pudding. It was pretty good. I do make Jello with fruit sometimes. Sometimes, I make baked apples.
They make a good dessert.

A lady I used to work with brought in some gluten free brownies that she had made.  They were a texture different then what I was used to but they were very moist and good.  I think she said she used rice flour.

My grandmas chocolate cake. It's been 23 years since she passed and no one, not even the best bakery or my mom can even come close.
I'm not a dessert person anymore

I like desserts... a lot. But my favorites....

Pumpkin Pie! I can't wait for Thanksgiving to have this.

Boston Cream Pie - preferably chocolate but the strawberry is good too. We actually got a cherry one this time. Our safeway bakery makes them really good.

Peanut Butter Balls. Which are also known as "buckeyes". We make them around Christmas.

I really don't like fruity desserts... I like my chocolate. My mom makes an amazing carrot cake and I love that!

Every day desserts... I don't eat it every day but I really love ice cream. I prefer "candied" ice creams such as peanut butter cup, rocky road etc.

And what is really tough to make and definitely not every day... chocolate tiramisu. I had it at a fundraiser once and took so many slices...

It's amazing! It's an Italian (not Italian it was ordered from an Italian place) dessert AND delicious!

And my mom makes amazing jam cookies. We got some cherry, rhubarb & raspberry jelly (a mix) from Costco and it makes really good jam cookies.

We also make sugar cookies around the holidays. Or butter cookies with frosting. We have a cookie press that has different designs we make the butter cookies with and I can't wait to do it again this year!

@denise Yes, the texture of gluten free baked products is very much different. Most of the recipes I use call for white rice flour, brown rice flour or tapioca flour. I do bake my own bread using these.
A lady at church always brings a gluten free dessert, trying to be sure there is a dessert I can eat. But the fact is I am so not used to eating them anymore, I don't really want them anyway.

Back in the days before my gluten free diet, I remember thin layer (about 26 of the) chocolate cakes my cousins wife makes. I really liked them. I liked carrot cake, and most any dessert. But not really now.

@blueyedgirl5946  do you have any tried & true gluten free dessert recipes that don't contain chocolate? My DD's BF can't eat gluten, dairy or chocolate. I can probably adjust it to use vegan butter so that's the easy part. I have the vegan butter and I bought rice flour. He's not vegan so I can use eggs. Thanks

i really like cookies too! but i don't like the tray after tray into the oven part, while i'm pretty much just hanging around waiting for each oven full to be finished baking. so earlier this summer i decided to work on finding recipes for cookies, but that are made on a baking sheet in 'bar form'. then i'll just let them cool just a bit and slice them into squares. i'm fine with square shaped cookies. and this fixes the 'standing around waiting' part that i really don't like. i've found a few recipes for cookies made this way so far, and will try them out when it gets to be frigid temps this winter -- and make some extra heat for the house in the process!

ohhh! i love cheesecake! i made one once, but it sure is a bit of a 'to do'.

i love the strawberry-rhubarb combination. when i was a kid we had a rhubarb patch. every year my mom would make cooked down rhubarb, with sugar in it. it was the consistency of applesauce. my dad and i were the only ones who liked it, and he and i looked forward to it every year.
