Hello everyone! I am new to this site and would like to introduce myself. I am a PhD student and just got my first cat Ghibli. He is a rescue, 5 months old, neutered male, and I think he is what you would call a "colorpoint lynx moggie" as he does not have any breeding papers and was a stray! Ghibli is as silly as they come and loves nothing more than to be cuddled and play for hours. He also LOVES watching TV (specifically disney cartoons). I am not new to cats, but I am new to owning my very own :) I am finding myself to be a kitty nutrition fanatic, yet I am not that educated yet on the subject and would LOVE any suggestions on what you guys feed your fur babies!

Currently, Ghibli gets a grain free-diet that is half wet food half dry food and occasional raw food (mainly chicken hearts). The dry food I use is currently Earthborn Holistic Grain Free, and the wet food varies :) Also, do you guys think he is a lilac or blue colorpoint?

Thank you!  When we went to go adopt, we simply told them what our household was like (quiet, home a lot studying), and told them we were open to getting an older cat/younger cat/male/female/special needs and then they brought us him saying they thought we would be a great home for him! He had some serious behavioral issues and shyness and vision problems due to parasites and being stray :( they nursed him back to health for a month and socialized him and now we couldn't ask for a better study buddy :) He can see perfectly fine now (with an occasional crossed eye), which I don't mind at all

Just took him to the vet today---clean bill of health!

How did you get your kitty? :)

Wow! Ghibli is gorgeous! How did you pick his name? Does it mean something special? It's very cute.[emoji]10084[/emoji]️ I can't answer your question about his breed and am not terribly knowledgeable about nutrition but just wanted to welcome you and your beautiful boy to TCS. It's a great community!

Thank you! His name was well thought out :) So there is this Japanese movie producer called "Studio Ghibli", who pretty much produces all of these amazing movies you could probably consider as the Disney movies of Japan. Movies such as Spirited Away, Howels Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, etc.. Many people in the US don't know them but I highly recumbent watching them if you haven't because they are beautiful movies with very deep meaning and awesome little cute unique characters :)

Your kitty is very beautiful too! Such warm colors... reminds me of fall

Oh my goodness, he's just gorgeous. His expression makes him look like an anime cat. Is that why you chose the name Ghibli?

I feed my cats very similar to your described method. They get Royal Canin indoor dry food and the wet foot varies, but usually Almo nature. One of my guys is also a kitten, also 5 months, and since he just really did not want to eat the kitten food (mostly I think it's psychological that he hates eating alone and wants to always share with his friend), I also give him some fish oil to supplement the extra kitten fat needs. Additionally if the humans are having fish for dinner, we give them a piece of fish, and occasional other meat products for a treat. (We don't eat meat other than fish, and that fairly rarely.)

Lonelocust,

Yes! That is why I chose his name :) That and I love all the Studio Ghibli movies.... they are my absolute favorite! I reminded me of a kitty quirky character that would belong in one of those films :)

Awesome, Maybe I should think about the fish oil! Do you give them pill supplements or the oil itself on the food? I like to give Ghibli raw chicken hearts sometimes and he loves them! Aw! if you don't mind me asking, what is your 5 month old kitten like in terms of their energy level and personality? Ghibli is an absolute DEVIANT right now.... cuddly one minute... and attacking things the next

It isn't necessary to supplement commercial complete diets with fish oil, so I wouldn't worry about it. I can see it could be helpful with a kitten on all adult foods, but if Ghibli is getting kitten food it really isn't needed.

Welcome to the site, btw :wavey: Ghibli is stunning

I think he's a blue colourpoint, but StefanZ StefanZ can tell you for sure.

As I remember it,  Almo makes holistic foods, BUT they are surprising low on fat. Perhaps OK for senior citizens, but not for kittens.  So I agree, some type of fat addition is wise.

If from fish, is another story.  A good quality oil in that case, so it doesnt contains proteins, as fish proteins  MAY add to the risk of allergy -  NOT that common, but quite a few cases of allergy in cats are caused by fish.   I presume its fish meat causing, not fish fat or oil.

Coldpressed rapeseed or olive oil may be another alternative.  Contains both Omega 3 and vitamine E too.   Raw egg yolk a third.

Yes, colorpoint lynx moggie is a good description.    Modern  siameses are renown they often are cross-eyed, so Ghibli being crosseyed MAY be a hint his siamese ancestry isnt very long back.  Although this is a speculation.    He gets a fatastic food!    You can add goat milk sometimes for supplement, if you wish - not because he need it for now, but its good nurishment.  Especielly if he, God forbide, would get sick, goat milk is sometimes used as remedy for cat animals.

Me too Im not sure if he is blue or lilac.  I guess on blue, but I wont swear.

I love the Studio Ghibli movies too. Perfect name for that adorable face!

As someone else commented, if you're giving him kitten-specific food, I wouldn't bother supplementing with fish oil. I only give my guy the supplement for extra fat because he's otherwise eating an adult diet. (I originally tried feeding him kitten food separately, and it it was like a full-time job, plus the cats seem to really enjoy eating with their heads together.)

My 5 month old has calmed down from 2 months ago, but still has a lot of energy. My 4-year-old is also a pretty energetic cat, so they play well with each other. When he was very young he was more about running headlong into anywhere and everywhere. Now he has more of an exploratory personality. He manages to find new and interesting ways to get to new and interesting places, but he's smarter about it. His cuddly one minute/complete attack mode the next minute has been steadily dropping. He was absolutely like that until 4 months or so. He still switches a lot during the day, but the change is currently less abrupt. Also as of a month and two ago while my older cat is still energetic, the kitten would wear his nerves down and he'd enjoy playing for a while but eventually run for cover when he got worn out. Now the little guy has mostly figured out when he's done playing and will go off with a toy or get human attention if he wants to keep playing and his friend is ready for a nap.

Welcome to TCS Ghibli is so cute! I feed my cats Blue Buffalo Sensitive Stomach dry. They get Friskies Indoor with gravy cause that's the only canned they will eat. The better brands just sit in the bowl and rot. Yuck!

What a face!  He made me laugh right out loud, he's such a cutie-pie!

You've been given excellent advice on feeding and nutrition already, so I'll just add that I kept Hekitty on kitten food for a full 18 months, just to be sure she got her growing in before switching.

Ya know, I almost typed LOL, but...we need a new text abbreviation...perhaps roflmeow..."rolling on floor, laughing at the cat!"

And of interest to this board, The Cat Returns, a children's movie by Studio Ghibli and it's head, Hayao Miyazaki.  Lots of fun!!  Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle, Tim Curry, Rene Auberjonois, Judy Greer, Andy Richter, Andrew Bevis and Kristen Bell are the vocal talent.

And you have a very beautiful Ghibli the cat!!!
