I think my Philippe is overweight at 19 pounds . Although he is naturally a big boy I think  that he needs to lose some weight . I am not sure how much he should lose or the proper amount to feed him .

I used to feed mostly dry diet but now finally  got my cats to eat mostly wet ..
I feed Fancy Feast Classic & 9 Lives Meaty Pate Chicken .
I give a Tbs of  Evo kibble for a snack

.For Philippe's weight how many calories per day should he have for weight loss ?

Your Phillippe is a good looking boy, I commend you for switching him to canned food, it is so much better than dry food.  My kitty Tiger was diabetic, i was lucky, she transitioned pretty easily to wet food once we had our diagnosis.  You may have come across this already, but here is an article by Dr. Lisa Pierson on obesity, and please check out her food chart for low carb foods http://www.catinfo.org/?link=felineobesity

I am no expert, but to me your cat doesn't look obese? Here's a chart that I used for comparison: https://www.purina.com/cats/cat-food-nutrition/is-my-cat-her-ideal-weight-or-overweight

You an use Dr. Lisa's calculations, but I think the formula is something like 20 calories per pound to maintain ideal weight? Do you have a scale?   I would get a baby scale, I have this one for my kittens:

You mention preventing diabetes, I am a member of Feline Diabetes Memberhip Board- they help me so much with managing Tiger's diabetes.  The wonderful  people therre might have some suggestions. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your response  ..  You are actually the second person that commented  that his body condition looked fine . So maybe he just needs to slim down a bit .   I did just join the FDMB  and those people are awesome . Everyone is very friendly and helpful . I just want both my cats to be very helpful .   Thank you very much .

A low carb diet will help prevent possible diabetes. Too many carbs puts a heavy burden on the pancrease. Being overweight is also a factor. Feed low carb canned food for both weight loss and diabetes-prevention
The FDMB is a great board even if you just have a borderline possible diabetic or, what they call, a GA (Bridge) diabetic

Thank you so much ..  Yes , I am now feeding 90% wet .. Fancy Feast Classic & 9 Lives Meaty Pate and they get 2 Tbs of Evo kibble each meal for a topper .  I am also feeding by caloric intake .  Yes , the FDMB board is very helpful . I am learning a lot ..

I agree with LTS3 about the low-carb diet. If you're able to keep Phillippe on the low-carb wet foods--I know it's been a struggle to get him there!--there's a good chance he'll slowly lose some weight over time. I'd also say he looks more like "slim down" rather than major weight loss is what he needs. He's a very handsome cat! What a face!

Thank you so much .. I appreciate your advice .. Yes , I agree he mostly just needs to slim down a bit . Maybe one or two pounds .   Well he is really enjoying the wet food so long as I stick to just the two brands I think it will go well ..  . They hate change ..

what a handsome boy, I am glad you have him off of dry food. Not sure how active he is but see if you can get him to move around a little more. The is great site that rates cat foods it it  naturalcatcareblog/2010/12/the-7-best-natural-commercial-cat-foods-so-far/ (add a dot com after the first word) good luck, the changes you are making will likely give you more time with him

Thank you so much .  Believe it or not he is very active . Always running around the house and up and down his cat tower ..  I do play with the cats too ..  So far they are both loving the wet food ..

Philiippe is so good looking!  Like my little boy, Tumbles, Philippe looks to have short leg syndrome.
(Tumbles is the chunky monkey in my house and I always tell him his body is too big for his legs.)  I agree, that he just needs to slim down a bit.  He's not morbidly obese, but he does need to trim down and look sleek and trim.  As many others have recommended, cutting carbs, going to a grain-free mainly wet diet will help.

I meant to say this in my post last night--play is serious business to cats- the more you can incorporate activity, he might "slim" down without actually being on a diet.  My two kittens just love this thing called, "Da Bird", .
