Do I (human) need to take rabies shot if my cat already has rabies vaccine(s)?

Hi this is my first post to this site. Hopefully to the right forum. My 2 years old male cat has two shots of rabies vaccines over the past year. last week, he scratched me accidentally and there was a bit of blood. I didn't make it a big deal since I thought my cat has vaccines already and that scar is from a scratch not biting (rabies in saliva right?). However some friends seriously recommended me to take rabies shots or vaccines myself. they told me a lot from their "personal experience" or "previous incidents" and said cat owners should be more careful (than dog owners) and take rabies shots as a prevention.

That concerns me a little. I checked the human rabies vaccination or shot from local. they are not cheap. so want to seek some help from your expertise, do you think I need to take any human rabies shot myself, just as a prevention (my cat does bite me sometime but no blood sometime)?

Thank you so much in advance!

If your cat has a rabies shot, then it shouldn't have rabies, thus you shouldn't need a rabies shot. I don't know why anyone would recommend that you get one for being scratched by a cat. Rabies is spread through saliva pretty sure and a cat with a rabies shot shouldn't pick up rabies?

With a cat bite or scratch you always want to clean it very well with hyrdrogen peroxide or something similar because there is a risk of infection.  However, a rabies vaccine for a human with a vaccinated cat is totally unnecessary.  Does your cat go outside?  Do you have any reason to believe he could have rabies?

The protocol used in the US, if you're bitten by a vaccinated animal, is not to get rabies shots. Otherwise there wouldn't be any point in vaccinating pets!

Of course, as with any animal, if he dies under suspicious circumstance you'll want to make sure a vet confirms cause of death. . .unexplained deaths should always be checked out.

Vacinated or not vacinated, if your cat starts acting funny, and not cat funny, but sick funny, like having a hard time walking, excess saliva, loss of appetite, unexplained or excessive aggression or any host of symptoms that just don't seem right for your cat- then a visit to the vet is in order just to make sure the cat is healthy.

So, if this is your cat, and you know it is healthy, and you are able to obseve it and notice if anything is out of order, even if you are bitten, or scratched the danger is in infection, and the wound must be cleaned and cared for, but you don't really need to worry about rabies.  You should probalby worry about a cat that ROUTINELY bites or scratches and draws blood.  If the cat treats someone beside you in that manner, it could cause a lot of problems.  But that is another story.

If you are bitten by a cat, or ANY animal you do not know, and you do not have the opportunity to observe for 24-72 hours, then yes, I believe Rabies shots are an appropriate treatment plan.
