Well, I think you people may already know this, but since a few I know did not knew it, I will say it. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States. It was one of the territorries that Spain had to hand over to the U.S. after the Hispano American War of 1898. Technically, we are all U.S. citizens and use an American passport, have a social security card and the works.
Of course since the day American troops invaded the island people have been fighting each other more than some old family feud over what should be the future of the country. statehood, or independence.
We vote staunchly all the time for the Independentist party, which is the party who wants Puerto Rico to be a independent country. Our reasons for that start with the idea of the dignity of governing oneself and not having another country making laws over your own (I doubt one can argue against that one), and the ideas of the economic viability of such.
There are two other parties,
The Partido Nuevo Progresista (New Progressive Party) who are the anexionists who want statehood. Those people see themselves as Americans, but the truth is that they aren't. Most of their movement members do not know English. (In fact only 12 percent of the total population know English), and think that statehood is the best alternative. Althought the Independentist party is a small party who never gets more than 6% they have come to fire all their pot shots at it.
The other party is the Partido Popular Democratico (Popular Democratic Party) who managed to lobby over 50 years ago the righyt to have a local constitution which has about the same force as a state constitution in the U.S.. According to them it was the solution of the whole affair, and that Puerto Rico is a "state freely associated with the United States". Of course we often say "Yeah, right".
Of course, we all know that no matter how hard the anexionists try, they would never manage to convince the U.S. congress to give statehood to a place where only 12% speaks English, and its as a second language, and which has a population numbering in several hundred thousand who actively lobby for Independence, (in the case of statehood then it would be illegal under secession).
Sorry, if it was all long, but to explain whom we vote for I had to give you a background of the surreal political landscape we've got.
