My Maine Coon, age 11, has had megacolon for a few years. He also has cystitis.
He is on Wellness canned only and I add water to it. He is not overweight and is very active. He has had a water fountain amd I have figured out that fiber makes it significantly worse. When he was on California Naturals canned, he was in pretty good shape but they stopped making it, apparently.
Lactulose stopped working cor him ages ago and I dont like it anyways because it can raise calcium levels and he has serious cystitis issues. Also, bcause of the cystitis, seafoodis not an option. Miralax was a nightmare for him..causing HUGE stools amd blood. Slippery Elm..well he wouldnt touch that stuff and its fiber. My vet receny said to buy Kroger brand human stool softener gel tabs...and give him a full gel tab. The size scares me because its a human size pill and I dont want to cause a sricture from him swallowind such a large pill. I was surprised to fimd that evem tha dosage still left him soth very hard amd dry stool. They were smaller thlugh, but with a small amount of blood.
He has not needed an enema for a long time but whem he was on a vet prescribed food, it was as often as two weeks. Despite that vet insisting on comtimuerthe prescription food, I changed him to a high proteinfood, which has since prevented enemas. However, passong stool sometimes causes.vomiting, he ways runs around while trying to go, and its HARD and sometimes bloody. He ses to get it all out though.
What else can I try? I have heard olive oil...how much can I give him each day? My vet says that because he isnt meedomg ememas, to just keep giving a softener amd that hes fine. I disagree very much. I know about Cisaprode but the vet doesnt seem to like it and says its very expensive. Is it safe long term?
