I am hoping someone can reply soon--my daughter is driving home from a weekend away and got a call--their 14 year old cat, who has been doing well on chemo for either cancer or IBS (same drug, so no tests) for two years, and doing really well, suddenly began yowling, and lay down and pooped, then voided. His feces were normal looking. Then he cried again, moved again, again lay down and repeated the process--again well-formed, normal looking poops. He has yowled some but otherwise just seems a bit out of it. Granddaughter is freaking out, and money is tight for weekend vet, so she's asked if I'd research what might be going on--he does have arthritis in his hips, but is this maybe a part of a dying process? Anyone have a similar experience or suggestions? She is trying to figure out how best to help the cat and the children cope. She'd rather wait until office hours than take him in and be told he's just too weak to go to his litter box (which is upstairs but has not been a problem ever before.) And the lying rather than squatting seems strange to me.

I am going to leave this up in case it helps someone else. She got home and realized he looked really bad. Cold, listless, and starting to breathe rapidly. Her husband (who he loves best) has taken him to the vet. The children have said goodbye in case he does not come back. We really feel blessed he has gotten (she reminded me it's three) extra years. He was skin and bones and thought to be dying then, and they were all at our home, where I was hosting a prayer retreat. Call it what you like, our whole team (21 prayer ministers) laid hands on him and prayed for him, and he started to put on weight from then and has been happy until just a couple of hours ago. If it's something else, I will post again, but we think we've said goodbye to a really good old boy, and that will be hard for a while, especially for the children, who haven't known life without him. Cats carry a special grace. This one is a very large tabby named Brewer (after the Milwaukee ones).

I  really do not know what is going on, but since it is the week-end, I am responding.

My guy has IBD also. He has also had iFlutd in the past. My guess is that this poor baby has someone going on with his bladder/urethra. It is not a situation which can wait.

The poor kitty is in pain. When they howl, they are in pain. He need Vet care now.

Not waiting until tomorrow morning.

He needs and emergency vet.

I sound kind of harsh, but honestly, I think this is an emergency situation.

I do not feel/think IBD or Cancer would express itself this way. I think something else is going on.

Please try to help your daughter to take the cat to the e-Vet. A lot is riding on getting timely treatment.

Good luck and please keep us updated..

I am hoping one of the more experienced people on here can voice in also...

((hugs))

Yes he sounds like he's in a lot of pain. I don't think this is part of any dying process. Perhaps the er vet can do a check up assure the bladder is emptying properly and keep him comfortable with some pain meds until tomorrow.

Thank you.  I added another paragraph as  an edit to say it looks like he is dying. He is at the vet. I guess I should have done a new post.  I appreciate your concern. I will add the outcome. He's such a character. He's had a loving home and family.

He's gone. I misled you with the yowling. That's one of the things we'll remember and be able to laugh about. He yowled as a way of life. He was 20 pounds when he was trim, as large as many small dogs. He yowled in the night, and the family didn't hear it, much as families who live near train tracks don't hear the trains after a while. He went on the screen porch each morning and yowled to let the world know he was there. All the neighbors did. They probably quit hearing it. His yowl was of heroic volume. It was epic, an announcement that a force of nature was with you. Now he's gone. I never got used to the yowls in the night, but I will miss him. Thank you, friends.
