My cat is 9 years old. He has asthma. Until August we had him on Predlisone. A low dose. But in August we went to the vet... his blood sugar was high. 270. The vet felt that was just stress because there was not glucose in the urine.  She also said she felt that wasn't high enough to suggest diabetes but my cat had been fasting because he fights at the vet and would have to be put out to get blood tests.

I, however, took  no chances. I took him off the predlisone, put him on all wet food and put him on a diet. He gets about 250 cals per day and has since august. He needs about 340 and since August he has lost 1 lb. Of 20. He is getting inhaled steroids.  I feel like losing 1 lb in four months is a decent rate.

In the last week, however, my cat has taken to meowing plaintifully a lot.  It does seem to be connected to food but I can't tell because sometimes he will not eat food and start immediately mowing at me.  He has always been a mouthy cat but this seems unusual.

He is pooping and piddling fine.  Goes about 3 xs day piddle. He seems to have a lot of energy and doesn't sleep a lot. He likes to play.

I am a little worried about diabetes.  I know that can cause excessive hunger and thirst.  But at the same time... my cat is on a diet so hunger is to be expected.

Or maybe he just is in a mood.

Any thoughts... anything I can look for?

All i can suggest is a vet visit and a complete exam with blood work and urine.  Why is he on a diet?

Fat. He is 20 lbs (now 19) needs to lose weight. I am hesitant to put my cat through that with such a vague symptom as increased meowing with a cat that is mouthy anyway. I will go if I notice any other symptoms.  I might also try those glucose strips for his piddle.

I know this from dealing with my husband's asthma and prednisone.  Prednisone is made from a sugar molecule, so over time, blood sugar rises simply because of the Prednisone.  So, it stands to reason that since he's been on steroids for a period of time that his blood sugar would be high.  I don't know what normal ranges are in cats, but since you've stopped the pred. his numbers should come down in time.  I would go ahead and have him checked again, if it hasn't been too soon since you stopped the pred.

I think that his weight loss is perfect!  You don't want to lose too quickly or you'll create other problems.  Keep doing what you're doing on that front.

As for the howling/meowing, it could be part of his personality.  I have a very vocal, whiny boy who cries when he can't find us, or we go outside, or we go to bed for the night, or when he's carrying his "prey" around.  It could be something like that, or it could be something medical.  If you take him in for blood sugar testing, you can always mention it to the vet.  If it gets worse, definitely get him to the doctor.

Right now  I am finding it terrible but it does seem connected to him wanting food. This morning I just couldn't take him any longer so I gave him some (gasp) dry food, and then he went to bed for like 8 hours, and got up and started almost immediately crying. I do have a solution -- I have a can with coins that he knows he is supposed to shut up when I shake it. that does work but hard to remember.

I am a little worried about hyperthyroidism also because he has a lot of energy latey but, he has only lost 1 lb in 4 months on a diet. I suspect it would be a lot worse if it was hyperthyroid.

Coming off the predlisone his personality did change so it is possible he is going back to his old personality which I kind of have never seen in this new house because he is on the predlisone since he moved in.

When he starts crying, divert him with play.  Get a wand type toy, my kitties LOVE DaBird, and engage him in play.  Also try a laser pointer.  Pretty much you want to redirect him.  He could just be bored and associating food with his boredom.

I feed my kitties 2 wet food meals a day, but I supplement with dry food.  They each get about 1/8 C or less spread out through the day at certain times, noon, 8:30PM and bedtime.  I make sure everything is grain free, except for my male who is on Rx stomach food.

Just to play with my head even more... I want up stairs to see my kitty and found him under the bed. He NEVER goes under the bed. Great.  I know you might say take him to the vet but he seems fine other than meowing and being under the bed.

eta:

So I did want to add that this week, I started him on a new Asthma med. Everyone told me that this medication is just the generic of the version that I was giving him. Flovent / Fliotide. But since his behavior seems to have changed since the day I gave him the new medication.. I feel like that can't just be a coincidence. It seems like he is hyper anxious... and I have seen some suggestion that Floxodie had caused people to be hyper and anxious.

I am going to pull back on the meds and see if things get better.

He seemed totally fine on the flovent.
