I'm completely new to this and was very glad to find this site.  I have "found" and kept six kittens - but I can no longer keep all of them.  3 are about 5 years old and I found them along with a sibling who we lost in 2011, in a field when they were a few weeks old.  They were incredibly friendly and showed no fear.  We kept them.  We have since learned not all wild kittens are like that.

Last year, I rescued a 6-8 week old kitten who turned out to be quite ill.  It took several months to get him well, and he was semi friendly with me but still cautious.  It was only after we neutered him in I think in December or January this year that he really calmed down, stopped peeing all over the place.  He's very sweet and will jump on the bed or sofa to be with me.  He will occasionally let me pick him up but more likely than not will run.

In July, I caught two 6-8 week old kittens, a male and a female.  The female took a few weeks to warm up to me, the male still hasn't.  I just had them spayed and neutered last weekend.  We now have 6 cats in the house and I think that has to be my limit.

HOWEVER....we have a feral colony that is exploding and I have decided I must do something or the city will be called in, they will be caught and killed.  This evening, I caught the mother and one of her kittens.  Unfortunately, I told the vet (I didn't know) that the kitten bit me, so the kitten is spending ten days in isolation.

The mother is a year old the vet thinks.  Her milk has dried up but he saw evidence of recent feeding so he is confident she is the mother of the two kittens.  I'd like to catch the other one but I saw him go into the humane trap and he wasn't heavy enough to trigger it.  I only caught the other kitten with mother.

Anyway....I am going to socialise the mother cat.  I also have numbers of various organisations in town who might be able to help me rehome them.  I'm going to call around as well and ask friends.

Wish me luck.

I truly do wish you luck.  Thank goodness for caring individuals like you that are trying their best to give these cats a better life.  I have learned so much since I joined this site about everything cat.  Welcome to TCS!

Hello LDK,

Thank you for trying to help these cats. It sounds as if you're doing a great job already. Does your city have any groups that TNR? If it's a large colony you might need some help catching all the cats. Organisations like Alley Cat Allies would be a good place to check.

If you have kittens that are too small to trigger the trap or a mother with several kittens you can trap them all using a drop trap. If you check YouTube there are lots of videos on how to make and use these kinds of traps, a great time saver if you have a lot of cats to get fixed.

I hope the little guy in isolation doesn't have anything seriously wrong with him. As I understand it rabies is pretty rare. At least he's in a safe place with regular food for now.

Good luck with rehoming the other cats. I managed to re-home a lot of the smaller kittens from the colony I TNR'd, younger ones soon adapt to life indoors.

Is your city OK with the older cats staying where they are once the colony is all TNR'd?

Keep us posted on how it goes, I'd love to hear more about your colony.
