Hi there - we have an adopted abandoned kitten who is about 10 weeks old. She recently had fleas which I treated her for with a flea powder, which was a repeat treatment. The first time there was no problems, but it seems like the second time was when the scratching started. I have made her a 'hoodie' from a sock which I now have to leave on constantly to stop her scratching. I have cleaned her ears with a disinfectant solution in case of ear mites. We live on an island in the tropics so there is no vet available. Any ideas???

What is she eating? I have a cat who was scratching himself bald behind the ears and we couldn't figure out why. No fleas, no earmites, no ringworm...Turned out he was allergic to wheat gluten. We switched his food and it solved the problem.

Unfortunately cat food is a real problem to find here in Zanzibar; we started feeding our 3 cats Companion Pets Classic small breed dog food (beef flavour) about 2 weeks ago. I'm sure the scratching had started before this.... They seem to love it and the other (slightly older two) have no problems...

We're in Zanzibar...[/quote]
Thanks for the info and the photo.

You do have a vet option, the Zanzibar Veterinary Clinic looks like a good place and they treat cats.  Your cat looks like it could be an infected wound, hard to say obviously. But the sooner its treated the easier and cheaper it will be to treat.  Please look at the vet clinic website.  http://www.worldwidevets.com/#!zanzibar-veterinary-clinic/c4m

Also, dog food is not suitable for cats and will over time make your cat sick. There must be cat food available, no?  If not you can go to the nutrition forum and get recipes for making quality cat food.
