Yesterday I was preparing my rental cottage for weekend visitors, and as I opened a bedroom window to air the room, a lizard about 8 inches long jumped down off the ivy into the room. I love having wildlife around - frogs, toads, weasels, foxes, squirrels are all regular residents in my garden, but I did not think my guests would appreciate a largish lizard running over their pillows in the middle of the night. I was not expecting David Attenborough!

So I had to catch it and remove it back to where it belonged. But lizards are fast. And they can get into places where I cannot reach. An hour later I had removed most of the furniture out of the bedroom and got the net that I use for the fish pond. I was anxious not to hurt or scare it as some lizards can shed their tails if they are caught, and I wanted to release it unharmed. Using the net I finally managed to corner it and pick it up in some soft kitchen paper. It ran off happily into the rockery, a much better environment for lizards!. When the guests arrived I decided not to tell them about how their bedroom got cleaned.

That is a beautiful lizard. The ones here are quite dull greenish brown, though they do have a nice zig-zag pattern on their backs.

I've taken so many lizards out of this house I've lost count.  Many of them have lost their tails.  What's awful is when I come home from work and find a tail but no lizard to go with it.

Funny way to get the guest room cleaned.

I have no idea about lizards.. Why do they lose their tails in the first place? what happens to them?

They can lose their tails for self defense; to get away from a predator.  I think most or all can regrow their tails.

I am not a lizard fan!  So I for one would have appreciated that extra thorough cleaning!

That is a really interesting fact about lizards. She'd their tails? Really? And an interesting looking lizard Fyllis. My favorite color too.[emoji]128516[/emoji] The GEICO gecko isn't really what a gecko looks like but I adore him. Quite frankly I would be kinda scared if one came in my window but no chance of that. Southern Midwest region makes that impossible. Theyre more likely to be in Arizona. Texas maybe too but here there are the most terrifyingly huge flying bugs.they can get into my apt and did 3 yrs ago. Ive only seen one other since then. Drawing conclusions that either they do really exist here or the 3 in my apt. then the one at the door last or this yr were created for me alone to experience. As scary as that was I'm left to wonder why.

KITTEN SAYS ' NEVE LICK A LITHERD...we had one poking it's head up between the door jamb on the porch. She was quite pitiful looking foaming and drooling. ( quick call reinforced the thinking this would pass quickly).

When a lizard drops its tail to escape a predator, the tail wriggles--to distract the predator--while the lizard runs away.

More than once, I've gone to sweep up a tail in the dust pan, and it moves....even though I know they can do that, it's so creepy.

Now that's just creepy. Scary even. Nature is fickle. Platapus, hermaohrodite, chameleon, all for a purpose I would suppose. I've seen some weird stuff on National geographic, or in it actually but? There are still rain forest tribes that wear no clothes. On! Try this one on for size: there's a monkey somewhere that has sex constantly. Saw that on PBS and it beats the tail shedding lizard hands down for creepy. Humans call that an addiction. The only problem is they didn't explain why this species of monkey does that?

But they have never left me a tail wiggling about.. They are a bit bigger than my thumb..

Grizzly saw one of them, once, and he started chasing it.. Thank God it was really quick, but I managed to let it climb my finger and put it in a high spot.. I assume the little guy hid in his nest afterwards..

But guess what the little guy tried to do, before the chase: he tried to take one of Grizzly's kibbles.. One kibble was too large for the "lizy".. Imagine how small they are!

@betsygee  is there some kind of a forest near where you live? And how big are the lizzards? or..uhm.. their tails..?

Aww, I love lizards! I have a crested gecko. They are one of few lizard species that will not regrow its tail. I take extra care with mine so he can keep his tail. I have a thread on him somewhere

I just Googled created gecko and they are beautiful, indeed!

I feel that lizards and birds are the morphological evidence of how dinosaurs used to look like..

I meant crested gecko. Lol. Silly auto correct.

All creatures are beautiful and stunning in their own ways

I am so glad that did not happen to the one I found - I can cope with most things but that would have freaked me out.

Yeah, the first time that happened, I jumped--I didn't know they would do that.

I'm glad you were able to get him out of there before your guests showed up!!  You're right, having it run across their pillow during the night or something might have put them off just a tad.

I am trying very hard to improve my star rating, and it all depends on guests' comments!
