Anyone have suggestions on brands of food for a diabetic cat who is obese? Vet prescribed Purina Pro Plan Diabetic Management. I am not a fan of Purina or Hills or Royal Canin or any of those stupid vet prescribed brands... I am looking for high quality, high protein, low carb, canned food recommendations. Thoughts?

Here is Dr. Lisa Pierson's Food Chart- http://www.catinfo.org/docs/FoodChartPublic9-22-12.pdf  look for canned food with carbs under 10%.  Are you a member of Feline Diabetes Membership Board? If not, I highly recommend you join and post there- the board was invaluable as my beloved Tiger was diabetic and CKD.  http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/  My girl loved Wellness,  Wellness Core and Weruva.  Due to early stage CKD, I had to avoid high phosphorus foods.

I recommend you read Dr. Lisa's section on feline obesity- plus work closely with your vet as it is important to feed the correct number of calories so as to avoid muscle wasting, rapid weight loss,or the risk of hepatic lipadosis.

Definitely join the FelineDiabetes.com message board for help and tips on managing your diabetic cat
They will also help your cat shed some of those extra pounds. The extra weight can keep blood glucose levels too high.

When I had a diabetic, I fed mainly Nature's Variety Instinct (the original ones, not the newer ones like Pride by Instinct or LID) and Innova EVO (most of the ones I fed have been discontinued but the two still available are good) along with a few other brands rotated in for variety. Dr. Lisa's food chart is a great place to start but it's a few years old and formulas may have changed since then. The FDMB board can provide a more updated list of suitable low carb canned foods to feed. Here's a list of low carb Fancy Feast: http://www.felinediabetes.com/glutenfree.htm
