Hi

My kitten is currently in the vet hospital on an IV because her kidney values are 'off the scale' as my vet has said.

Basically, she vomited on Saturday and looked a bit shakey Sunday evening, then Monday morning she just look very sorry for herself. I booked an appointment for Monday afternoon and by the time I got home she looked really bad, she looked thinner and her coat was dull, she could also barely walk.

I took her o the vet and he said she was very dehydrated and gave her 60ml of fluid, an appetite stimulant and some vitamins. He then took some blood. He called me that evening saying her results for kidneys were 'off the charts' and that I had to take her in for an IV.

I did that evening and then we saw her again on Tuesday, we were told she needed another 48 hours for them to be sure what was wrong but they felt it could either be congenital kidney disease or toxin.

They said it was unlikely to be anti-freeze as her calcium levels were normal. So the vet told us that if the blood tests show no improvement this evening then we will have to put her down.

We saw her last night as well and she seems so perky and cuddly. She was purring and walking on our laps like normal, I know she is hooked up to an IV but I just can't see how she could be effectively on deaths door.

Please help as I am faced with a hard decision...

I would get a second opinion.  A cat who is dying from kidney failure will appear to be very sick, lethargic, not eating, etc.  If she has decent energy and appetite then i think there is o reason to have her put to sleep.  I would take her to another vet.

There isn't any way we can tell you whether or not what your baby has is congenital or not, but here is a website that discusses in great detail Acute Kidney Failure, which could be caused from Anti-Freeze, eating certain plants, certain HUMAN medications, or even a kidney infection.  http://www.felinecrf.org/acute_kidney_injury.htm

I have a cat with Chronic Kidney Failure, so I am quite familiar with the aspects of kidney disease, although there are many differences between acute and chronic.  What I can tell you is this....I would definitely not give up yet, especially since you are seeing such a dramatic difference already in how your little one is feeling.

Hang in there.
