Hi All,

First time kitten owners here, my wife and myself.

We adopted Tails from a local shelter, she is now about 11 weeks old.

This is Tails last night after we went grocery shopping, sadly, no new toys for her.

Anyway, we have a sample pack of dry kitten food given to us by one of the local stores here.

The brand is Performatrin[emoji]174[/emoji] Kitten Formula Cat Food.

Here is a photo of the feeding chart

With Tails being about 3 months old and around 2-3 lbs, it states we should be feeding her only a half cup of the dry food??? Is this per day or per meal???

I was under the impression that kittens this young would be eating much more than 1/2 cup. But this is what it states and why I came here for advice.

Thanks =)

Ignore the feeding guide on the package. It's just a guide after all. Every kitten and cat is different so there isn't a one size fits all amount. Just feed your cat as much as she wants
Growing kittens need a lot of food to meet their needs. 1/2 cup of food a day isn't enough. 1/2 cup for a meal is plenty but kittens can't eat that much in one sitting so they'll just come back to the bowl often to snack. Maybe measure out 1 cup of food and let that sit out all day for your kitten to eat when hungry. You can always adjust the amount so that there isn't a lot of food leftover at the end of the day.

Do you feed any canned food? Canned food is better for a cat's health than dry food. You can read through Catinfo.org for why. Some canned food in the diet is better than none at all, IMO. Let your kitten settle into her new home before you start changing or adding food. Too many changes at once can lead to an upset tummy.

Welcome to TCS :wavey:

General guidelines for feeding kittens suggest they eat twice as much food per pound of body weight as adult cats. My 8-10lb cats eat approximately 1/2 cup of dry food a day plus about a tablespoon of wet food. 15lb cat eats closer to 3/4 cup. I would say for your 3lb kitten 1/2 cup a day is plenty. You might want to break it up into 3-4 small meals just so Tails doesn't gobble it all down at once and make himself sick. Make sure he has plenty of water, and you could also give him some wet food to supplement the dry.

I feed my foster kittens as much as they want. I primarily feed wet, and then kibble as a snack. I don't know that i'd follow the guidelines on the bag since she's growing rapidly leaving kibble out for her to eat as she pleases is perfectly fine. I'd suggest you provide her wet food too. I feed Nutro natural choice kitten, which is pretty affordable and my foster kittens love it.
