So far out in left field I got lost
I got home from work tonight and Nakita has hurt her back right leg
I think but am not sure that she may have sprained it running around in the backyard with Nemo. I am taking her to the vet in the morning for her first check-up and also to see what is wrong with her leg. I checked her over and there is no evidence of Nemo biting her or anything like that. Poor baby has been in that little cage so long it must have felt really good just to run

She was so sweet tonight she gave me a nuzzle on the nose with her nose and ate some food right out of my hand. I worked with Nemo on his obedience tonight also and he did really well we have been slacking since it has been too cold for me, but Nemo loves the cold. I can't wait until I can take Nakita to the classes in March.

I am going to try and introduce The Sammycat and Oscar to her this weekend. I hope that goes well. Nemo loves the boys and will give them a really big sloppy kiss
The Sammycat gets the funniest look on his face when Nemo gives him a smoochie
. Anywho enough of my babbling
Wish my girl luck in the morning.

Wishing Nakita luck in the morning, hopefully it won't be too serious.

Poor Nakita!! I do suggest that when you do your introductions to Oscar and Sammiecat, keep a soft muzzle on him, or at least hang onto his collar. You want things to go well, but big dogs can cause a lot of damage on cats. I'd hate to see a mishap!

Good luck at the vets tomorrow. I hope it's not too serious!

Hopefully, the injury will heal quickly.

I was just wondering well a sled dog like Nemo tolerates the summer heat down there in Georgia? Can these dogs be trimmed by a groomer so their fur isn't so thick?

EDIT: Whoops!!!! I forgot about this thread being moved from the lounge! Sorry!

Introducing a dog into a cat household

My only addition to this article would be to keep the dog under control at all times, on a leash or in a crate, when around the cats and closely observe the body language of both the dog and the cats, until you are certain the dog can be trusted with them.

If the cats are at all fearful, give them some more time - a dog is a lot less likely to mess with a cat who is secure and stands its ground than one who is fearful and runs away.

I hope her leg is better soon, and that the introductions go smoothly too.

My vet has told me it would be better not to have him shaved since his double coat acts as an insulator from the cold and the heat. I do have to brush him a lot to strip the undercoat in the hot summer heat. He loves that part of grooming the brushing
I am going to start gently brushing Nakita to see how she will be with grooming. Since she has a double coat too it will have to be done as often as Nemo's coat.

One thing I do know that Nemo does in the summertime is dig these giant crators in the yard, they are more like tunnels, to keep cool in the heat of the day. I have tried the kiddie pool of water to keep him cool but all he does is drink it. He will seriously hurt me if I try to put him in it and it's almost impossiable to bath him. He seriouly hates to get wet. Not sure about Nakita yet though.

Tess-Tuxedokitties thanks for that article it will give me a better understanding of how to introduce her to my babies
It was easy with Nemo since he was a little(40lbs)puppy when I got him. Yeah I know 40 lbs isn't little but he was young at 4 months old. Ceasar my Min Pin has always been the baby since I had him first before even getting The Sammycat or Oscar.

I took Nakita in for her check-up this morning. She is doing well, the vet said that she is only about 10 months old. Her leg is much better today
She isn't limping on it as bad as yesterday.

She will be going in for spaying on Wednesday the 21st. This is my first experience with any kind of animal that is female, so I am not sure what I will have to do for her after her surgery, but I am sure that the Vet will fill me in on everything.

Good news!

I'm glad you liked the article. I just wanted to add that I'm glad you're going to take her to obedience. Just make sure that you're comfortable with the instructor, and that they will 'customize' the learning for what's best for Nakita - different dogs may need different training approaches.

My girl Beth was adopted from a shelter last winter at about 12 months old, and was initially very submissive & somewhat fearful of new things, though friendly in a shy way. She loved obedience, and it did wonders for her - she has blossomed into a wonderful dog...she even earned her Canine Good Citizen title in August. Meeting friendly new dogs and people and learning how to do what you ask should really help Nakita's confidence.

Oh yeah I love the trainer that I have for obedience. She helped me to get a very dominant dog under control. Nemo who is a huge boy and strong, very strong broke my little finger on my left hand the very first day of class for obedience.

Heidi the trainer told me that other people would have just stopped the training all together or taken him back to the pound
She suggested that I put a prong collar on him. I tell you that is power-steering for dogs
He graduated top of his class last spring after using that collar. So I know that she will help me decide what is best for my little shy girl Nakita. She is becoming more and more trusting of me and Ken every day

LOL! Training collars work wonders don't they?!? Congrats to Nemo on making the top of his class!! My Ellie Mae came in last in her class, but considering she started as a fearful submission pee-er who was terrified of her shadow, the trainer told me that she came the farthest of all the dogs. Her sit was a real sit (instead of a terrified cower on her back on the ground), she came most of the time, but she just couldn't get the weave between dogs down pat. We worked with her at home once we were armed with the knowledge to train her.

Yeah training collars are DA Bomb

You go Ella Mae and Beth
I know that you and Tess both were very proud of them. Were you able to take her around the other dogs in the class at first when you started the class? That is what I am worried about the most with Nakita. I am afraid that she will just be really skiddish and not even walk up to the area that we will be using for the training. I don't want to drag her up there but I really want her to go through this course to help with her confidence.

Edited because I can't spell
