Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, but have an interesting question. First, I'm Sonya and I live in Oklahoma. I've always been a cat person...from the day I was born, but have been without a kitty for a few years now. I have three little girls and 4 step sons (3 of whom come every other weekend).

Today we went by the city animal shelter and checked out the cats that they had. All of them are ready for adoption tomorrow, so as of tomorrow, we'll be cat owners again!! We already have an appointment with the vet for shots, exam and neutering on Monday.

The interesting thing is this cat's paws. They are very intriguing. He's an orange tabby cat....a big ole guy, and his front paws look like they are "split"...that's the only way I can describe it. It's like he has two big toes with claws on each toe....I know...it sounds weird, huh? Any ideas?

Ok, gonna go, but would love to know if anyone has any ideas.

Sonya

A polydactyl cat perhaps? Does he have more than the average number of toes? If he does, he is a polydactyl. Most Poly's look like they have split toes. There is a great thread (Post your Poly's Here) that shows off these multi-toe cats.

Is this what you saw? My adopted baby Elwood is in there.

Congratulations on your new addition!

Yes, this is kind of what they look like...my husband noticed it first...he thought he had a growth on his paw and when we looked at it, I noticed it was like he had two paws on one foot...LOL. For being a stray, he is so calm and lovable and just wanted to roll over and be pet.

I'll take some pics tomorrow when we get him home and hopefully get some good ones of his paws to show you all.

Sonya

I think we might name him Boomer....we are a huge OU Football family and then if we ever get another cat we can name it Sooner and together they would be Boomer Sooner...LOL.

When we first saw Elwood, we thought he had a birth defect. Since he was orphaned at 10 days old, we hand weaned him so handled him a lot. For the longest time we thought it looked like club foot. Then his feet formed enough that one day, I saw the extra pads fully formed. When I told my friends that ultimately adopted him, they said "polydactyl, a Hemingway cat". That made up their decision to adopt him, as he is a special boy.

Polys are often referred to as Hemingway cats. Hemmingway lived in Key West Florida. The cats that he has were polys. Now, most of the cats that live on the island are polys too. Here is a pic of some ferals on the dock. Most of the cats in the pic have poly toes

Here is a link to the Hemingway Cats that live in Key West! They have 60 cats living at the museum!!! http://www.hemingwayhome.com/HTML/our_cats.htm

The cat named Charlie Chaplain is so beautiful! All of them are, but the markings on that one in particular are so cute. Thanks for the great link.

Good luck with Boomer!

That's a great link, Coco Maui.

Charlie is adorable! Love that face!

I love Zoey's thumb's up pic, that's hilarious.
