From my posts, it probably sounds like all we do is bicker about stuff.....and actually, that's kind of true in a way. But a lot of our bickering isn't really serious and a lot of times, we'll just argue for the sake of arguing more than anything. It's more good-natured than nasty. I'll be the first one to admit that he does put up with a lot from his wife sometimes. But his wife deals with a lot from him, too, so it probably evens out in the long run. I'd never trade him in. Never. He's a good man, even if he doesn't want lasagna.

But dang! There's nothing wrong with lasagna for Christmas dinner!

As for the shopping, our DIL usually throws me an email with gift suggestions for everybody. I do the same with her. And then when it comes time to start shopping, I usually start by going online for the kids. But Rick and I do enjoy going out to shop, too, so when we're out and about, if we see something we think somebody might like, we'll get it.

Our granddaughter is really into American Girl right now, so we'll be adding to her stash. Grandson is a sports fanatic, but we need some ideas for him. He's also a big Legos fan still, so Lego sets are always OK with him. And part of their present is always a day trip to somewhere. One year, we took them to Inner Harbor, one year, we all went to the Crayola place. Always followed by a dinner in a nice restaurant. We haven't decided what we're going to do this year for a day trip.
I never got that from your posts. It seems to me like you 2 are pretty perfect for each other. Rick is definitely a keeper.

Our thanksgiving is going to have to be dairy free, gluten free and low fat. Jealous? Yeah, I didn't think so.. oh yeah. Did I forget to mention no chocolate, either?

So glad I have most of my shopping done.  I fractured my ankle yesterday and am on crutches.  Tomorrow I see a specialist and find out how bad it really is.

I was planning to begin wrapping this week since most gifts get mailed to other states.  No one lives near us but we had the same story in Maryland.  Not sure how that will happen, guess I will get Kim to help.

DH cooks Turkey day dinner.  yes, we have a turkey with most of the trimming for the 5 of us.  My kids like to make small turkey pot pies and have turkey w/gravy for lunch with the leftovers.

No Chocolate!  Isn't that considered cruel and unusual punishment?

DD's boyfriend's family doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving (yes- they are US born and it has nothing to do with religious beliefs- I have NO idea why they don't celebrate it). He's coming to our house. He's really sweet and I'm happy to have him. He can't have dairy, gluten, chocolate or any meat that isn't very lean. He had his gallbladder out a few years back but that's just part of it. DD is a VERY picky eater. She doesn't like turkey so that's out.

Merrick LID chicken pate for everyone?

I'm thinking a very lean roast beef, maybe an eye round roast with vegan mashed potatoes, salad with some sort of vinaigrette and gluten free rolls or bread with vegan butter. Dessert can be a fruit sorbet with gluten free sugar cookies made with vegan butter

Then again...

With some finely chopped chives and a touch of fresh parsley, that Merrick pate might not be half bad.

I see a margarita or 3 with mine.

@blueyedgirl5946: i'm at the phase where I do the house up but hate taking it down.  When we bought our house I was very excited to "do up" the front door for every holiday.  It doesn't always happen; but at least from the street I look on top of things.  Except last year when I didn't get the red and white garland off the front porch railing until March sometime. DH said we left it up for Valentines day.
The fact that DD has a January birthday lights a fire under me getting the Christmas things put away.  Although I'm sitting here thinking how nice it would be to do her birthday celebration elsewhere this year.  I'm always wiped by the time her birthday rolls around!  The good thing about it is taking advantage of the Christmas sales or Christmas clearance when I'm shopping for her!

@Winchester  ; i doubt anyone thinks you 2 are anything less than star-crossed lovers. Why else would he volunteer to clean, peel apples, shell limas and all that other stuff you do for each other.

I'm loving your lasagna for Christmas idea.  Debating it myself now.  My mother has done that. But we still end up with a multitude of side dishes.  But in the last few years we have chosen to forgo her nice dishes for some sturdy paper plates.
Last year we had a houseful for Thanksgiving and ate buffet style.  It was wonderful!  This year will feel very different.  I wasn't expecting it; but maybe it'll be a good thing.

We always celebrated on Christmas Eve at Mom's so anyone with little kids could have Christmas morning with them. There was always a pretty good crowd with Mom, Dad, 5 adult children, their spouses, grandkids - with spouses or significant others and great grandkids, and always a stray friend or two! LOL Anywhere between 25 & 35 people! Mom always made a huge pot of homemade soup and then had buffet style sandwiches with all the condiments and trimmings - and, of course, dessert. Then we all went into the family room to open gifts. After that, the majority of us would attend (Catholic) Midnight Mass.

Thanksgiving was always an elaborate dinner with Mom's good china, but Christmas, she just used upscale paper plates so it was an 'easy' clean up.

Kat0121 Kat0121 Thats how I feel about my step-dads new vegan diet! My mother is mostly following suit. There is so much they are not eating; its really going to take some planning for Christmas dinner!

fyllis fyllis My dads side of the family always did their main Christmas celebration on Christmas Eve as well. Then my mothers side had another big dinner Christmas Day. No wonder all my holiday memories involve food and family! I miss those days this time of year!

When my mother was able to do so, she always had a Christmas Eve buffet-type dinner. I made the baked ham, my seven-layer salad, baked beans, and I always brought the dessert (usually it was a cake in the shape of a Christmas tree or a snowman). Mom got to the point where she couldn't do it anymore, even though my sister and I were always careful to do the clean-up work after dinner and, after the gifts were opened, the guys all cleaned the mess up. My parents didn't really have to do that much....we were very careful. But it still got to be too much for them. And then they downsized and moved into a small apartment. We still tried to get together for smaller family dinners, but I started doing the big holiday dinners. Then my sister and I started taking turns.

The last holiday dinner we had at my parents' was a Thanksgiving dinner.....Mom wanted us all there; we knew it was going to be Dad's last Thanksgiving and we made sure we didn't miss it. My sister and I did the meal planning and brought the food. We cleaned up after; Mom didn't have to do anything. Dad died at the beginning of December that year. Mom followed him about two years later.

My sister has her family Christmas dinner now and we have ours. But they always come over later in the day for dessert and a glass of wine. And even now, my sister and I will quietly hold our wine glasses up and look at each other. I don't think anybody else realizes we're doing it. But it's our way of saying, "We haven't forgotten you, Mom and Dad."

Our kids used to take turns with us on Christmas Day....one year with us, one year with DIL's family. But the grands are getting bigger and it's getting to the point where they want to stay home on Christmas. And that's fine with us. So we'll either see them the Saturday before or the Saturday after. We usually have our actual Christmas dinner when the kids visit. So, on Christmas, I'll do a nice holiday brunch-type meal. Rick's parents would come for dinner, usually my brother and SIL and there are some close friends who like to eat with us, too. It's a nice time and it's more relaxing than a huge meal on the holiday.

(Although last year at Christmas? I'm 99.99% sure we did lasagna!! Seriously! And then had our actual holiday dinner with the kids later on. I said something to Rick about it last night and he doesn't believe me -- of course he doesn't -- but I think that's what we did.)

I agree. I do most of my shopping at home with my kitties. Crowded stores are the worst

By the way- your granddaughter gets cuter every day :9:
Thank you. She's very sweet and so spoilt.

How did your appointment go?  I hope you aren't in too much pain!

@Winchester  - My Aunt took over the family meals when my Gram couldn't do it anymore.  She has a tiny house; but we crammed in there!  She is just as good a cook (so amazing!) so that has been nice; the times we have been there.  I got one last Christmas at my Gram's in 2003.  It was really special.  I hadn't had one since 1993 and now those days are long gone.  It was still a very sentimental day.  I have a framed picture of DH and I in front of my Grandparent's fireplace on that day.  Because of DH's job; we can't travel on any major holidays.  Some years; like this one, that is harder.  We have our own traditions now; but sometimes I just cant help thinking of the old traditions.

I'm in a cast for 3 weeks at least.  My 'good' foot hurts more than the other one.

Oh boy.  My cousin's daughter broke her foot about a week ago and is currently flying across country on that foot because it was too expensive to change the flight.  She said she took a nap the other day and dreamed about walking around the house doing housework.

I can totally understand the dream!  I hope she got a wheelchair at the airport.  These crutches are exhausting, at least to an older overweight person.
