140 pounds of apples equals:

9 quarts of chunky applesauce for the freezer

18 quarts of smooth applesauce for the freezer

16 apple dumplings for the freezer

2 Dutch apple pies for the freezer

1 9 X 9-inch pan of apple crisp for dessert tonight and for Rick to take in his lunch the next couple days

and 35 Granny Smith apples for me to munch on, not including the 7 that have already been eaten and the 4 apple dumplings that DH and I ate before they ever made it into the freezer

I'm done with apples for the year!

(Every year we keep buying more apples. You would think that I should run out of things to make with them. But I never do. There's an apple cinnamon bar recipe that I want to make next weekend. I was going to make it tonight, but quite frankly, I'm all apple-ed out for right now. I really wanted to make apple butter BBQ sauce, but I ran out of apples.)

I remember when I used to get over 100 pounds of apples and get them all done in one day, but those days are gone and I'm a lot older now. I had done two bags a couple weeks ago and finished the apples off yesterday with the other two bags. There is simply no way I could work on that many apples in one day anymore. Years ago, I would buy the apples, then my mother and my MIL would spend the day with me, making all kinds of apple pies and dumplings for sharing and for the freezer. Sometimes my aunt would help out, too. I would put something in the crock pot for supper, so none of us had to deal with a meal and my dad and FIL would come down then for dinner. It was an all-day chore, but we also had a lot of fun. We did that with Christmas cookies, too, and sometimes sticky buns. We'd have a huge baking fest and then we'd split everything up, so we each had baking goodies. I really miss those times....I don't have anybody to bake with now and sometimes, I really miss that.

The moms got too old to be able to handle it, but Rick still needed his applesauce. So he started helping me and we'd cook and puree the apples and then get the sauce in the freezer. I started doing the pies and dumplings by myself, so I don't do as many pies anymore...it's pretty much just the two of us. The dumplings are a lot like pie anyway and I always share the dumplings with Rick's mom and my sister and BIL.

It's a lot of work, but I also enjoy it. After he left for church yesterday, I just stuck a bunch of CDs in the changer and sang as I worked.

But I'm still frustrated that I didn't have enough apples to make any apple butter BBQ sauce; that's good stuff. I may run to a local orchard later on this week for a few Paula Red apples.
