Hey there. Generally its given once a day, with a one day break after 5 days, although some cats (like mine) can tolerate it daily without a break.  Since its to prevent nausea and vomiting i would generally go with before meals.  What'd going on with your kitty right now?

Hi, Steven, Obi has been GREAT the past several months.  Hairball vomiting is almost non existant, other than the occasional one that i consider normal.  He has defecated twice outside the box - both times small, hard stools, so I was not particularly concerned.

I have been giving him a quarter of a 24 mg tab of cerenia weekly for prevention.  I forgot Thursday, and yesterday morning I discovered he vomited.  He almost never vomits food.  Then this AM, I gave him Cerenia, breakfast - and he vomited again.  He was fine after his evening meal yesterday and his demeanor seems fine today - I am just giving him a tablespoon of food at a time in 2 hour intervals.  One variable is that I recently expanded his Natures Variety diets of rabbit and salmon formulas to include the chicken one.  I wonder if that is the culprit, but he did not vomit the chicken, he vomited rabbit yesterday and salmon today.  Still I wonder if the chicken could have caused some upset.

He also takes Denamrin but sometimes that comes back up - which is what happened yesterday when he threw up his food.

Thought appreciated.

Hi there .I don't mean to barge right in here. But I have dealt with chronic constipation as well as mega Colon cats for 12 yrs.your boy pooping rocks is not good. You know that right? many reasons why cat's do actually vomit.Cerenia if dosed for vomiting to a cat that has constipation is not good.it is a brain drug telling them not to vomit but there is a reason he is vomiting. If he is vomiting because he has GI issues that stool is not moving properly & you are not receiving nice soft logs. That has to be addressed honey. Many a cat I have seen prescribed cerenia for vomiting when constipation is the problem.Which long term will lead to Mega Colon. Please tell me more???Is your kitty a ckd kitty? Meaning have you had a recent full blood panel with urinalysis to rule out any renal insufficiency? The reason I ask is renal kitties which I have had 3, pee out more dilute urine than kitties with good renal numbers.Meaning they are peeing out vital water in the body.usually the kidneys will pull from the bowel(drying out the stool) before they pull from a more vital part of the body. How old is your babe?Outside the litterbox is very common as it is a" learned aversion" to the litterbox. They will still pee in it but pooping even one time a kitty experiences pain from rocks, they will then assume that litterbox is a place of pain. And poo anyplace else. You can google "learned Aversions to litterboxes with cats.If this is why your kitty has been givien Cerenia & vomiting & no one as per your vet asked how the BM dept was then please reply with more information.i can(WE) can help you help your baby.Gee.i have seen this so many times. It honestly just makes me wanna yell..What does your kitty eat? Dry or canned?how old is your babe? How long have you been noticing the vomiting? Does your kitty go outside? Neutered or not? All being pertinent questions to know what is really going on.We can help You!!!! talk to us..

Momo:  thank you for all your concerns but Obi is a very well taken cared for cat.  He had a senior panel done at the end of August; an ultrasound in May and another mini ultrasound (of his liver) done in August; he has blood work about every 3-6 months.  His stools are generally normal; he gets psylllium and also a Probiotic.  The 1/4 tab cerenia each week is a maintenance dose.  Knock wood, all his functions on the chem panel have been normal. @StephenQ?

Hi Obi's Mom.

That is great.I have no idea how old Obi is nor what the liver values are coming back at.You should have a file for Obi with all the test results you have had over the years.you are privy to all that documentation.Cerenia is is not normally dosed for hairballs if that is what he is struggling with. You can go to www,felineconstipation.org & read about lecithin added to the diet.Psyllium husk does not feed the good gut bacteria so hopefully your probiotic does. Some probiotics are constipating as well. All the plumbing must be working properly.Hard stools produce reflux action to gag or vomit. It is a given.Miralax if you tried it is far superior to psyllium husk as per softening the stool.Hugs To Obi.C.JMHO

Obi is not constipated..  Also he gets egg yolk lecithin twice daily.  He is 16 and as I said, all the values on his chemistry panel came back normal at the end of august.  Yes, we started him on metameucil because I noticed that he threw up hairballs near  his litter box which let  the vet to speculated that he was straining.  But the hairballs have dramatically increased and his stools look quite normal to me, and I have had cats for over 40 years.   But thank you again for your concerns

Hmmm.....maybe it was a fluke.  Hard to say but if it continues then I'd talk to your vet.
