Hello. I have been a lurker here for a very long time, I just love coming here and reading. I have a major problem that I need some advice on.

I have 7 beautiful feline fur kids Ages 4 down to 10 weeks. I am battling a URI epidemic here.

I have three 16 month boys that started with this mess..... Sneezles and Mort aren't too bad. Sneezing and a little congestion. I have these guys isolated in my master bath.

Scar on the other hand is really bad. Sneezing, mouth breathing, he is now drooling excessively. I took him to the vet on Friday. He was given several shots and I was sent home with Clavamox. ALL of my cats are getting Clavamox..... Scar has since stopped eating or drinking. I am now syringe feeding him kitten formula.  I have tried passing out Lyseine, putting it in food or mixing with water. 500mg a day. I am now mixing bovine colostrum, DMG with the formula when I feed him. He has now started drooling excessively....  I am not able to get him to the vet until Mon morning, no Cat ER anywhere near by. What else can I do to help calm down this virus? I am afraid I am going to lose Scar...... I am running a vaporizer..   (according to my vet, this same virus is running rampant in this area)  They are also really stressed in the isolation room.... What can I do to help calm them down and reduce the stress? I am getting pretty desperate at this point....

When I leave the isolation room, we spray down our clothes with Lysol, wash our hands with Hibaclense. To help prevent the transfer of this illness....

I have two cat's outside that have mild cases... The kitten so far is symptom free and isolated in a bedroom. He was exposed before I knew what was going on though....

Not only are the fur kids stressed, I am on the verge of a nervous break down over this.... this stress on me has been HUGE... I am afraid to go to work, I can't sleep etc.... Sometime's I just want to cry because of the weight from this whole situation....  Some please help give me some advice on how to handle this....

OK, first thing you need to try to do is try to calm down.  I know it's hard, but cats are very sensitive to OUR emotions, and they stress out when WE stress out.  Normally a URI, even a bad one, will not kill an adult cat.  Elderly cats and young kittens are the most vulnerable.  He is on medication, you are force feeding him, he should be ok until you can at least speak to your Vet tomorrow.

When cats have an outbreak of Herpes, which I'm guessing this is part of the cause of this whole thing , the normal L-Lysine treatment is 500mg TWICE a day.  So I would think you'd be safe to increase what you are giving.  And you're mixing that into Scar's syringe food, right?  So he's getting that, plus the bovine colostrum, etc. in his feedings?  Are you also syringing him water, or unflavored pedialite.  With all that drooling, I'm guessing he's losing fluids, and needs extra, so I'd make sure he's getting extra put in him, and you did say he's not drinking.  Have you thought about KMR for him too?  I know milk isn't good for humans when they have a cold, but don't think KMR actually has milk in it.  Maybe this would be a question for your Vet tomorrow.  BTW, hemay be drooling because sometimes they get oral ulcers with a Herpes outbreak

So you have the 3 boys together in the master bath?  Do they all get along okay?  Why are they stressed?  If they don't feel well, I wouldn't think they would want to be out running around.  They've got food, water, beds, litter boxes and the vaporizer (VAPORIZER, not humidifier) running some of the time?   Sometimes classical music, particular harp music, is very soothing to cats.

I'm not sure Lysol is the way to go.  That stuff stinks horribly.  When I have to use it, I try to keep the cats away from it.  Is there anyway you could just change your clothes outside the bathroom, then put them back on again when you go back in?  Or strip down to your undies when you go visit "the boys"...something like that?  I really do hate the use of those aerosols, especially with a respiratory issue going around.

Hang in there.  I can't imagine having 7 cats all ill at the same time.  Gosh, i can't imagine having 7 cats at the same time.  I thought 4 was hard enough.  Now I'm down to 3, but one has chronic kidney disease, so she's  full time job
. Good thing I'm retired.
