Hello everyone! My name is Kristen, so here is what happened. My little girl Autumn is about 6 months old and recently she has been eating SO much, she will literally push our other cats out of the way. Her belly started getting very big and bloated, but it didn't look like she was growing anywhere else. She is very small. She urinates and defecates normally. So we took her to the vet this morning and our vet got some of the fluid from her stomach and said it was "straw-like" color and kind of gooey. He suggested we have her euthanized because there's no cure. Should I get a second opinion? Is this FIV? The symptoms include not eating but she eats so much. I'm just very concerned and I don't want to make the wrong decision with her life if something can be done. Thank you.

There is no way to assume fip based on the color and consistency of the fluid.

It must be examined for protein and other too to make that determination.

It had a high protein content.

So it was evaluated then?

It sounds like the early stages of fip unfortunately.

Until it reaches the point of really wreaking havoc on the insides, kitty will continue to eat, but this will change.

Very sorry, this is just awful to deal with, just give lots of attention and love, and please dont delay letting her go when she is showing you it's time.

Yeah, our vet says thats what he thinks it is. It's just so hard when she looks healthy besides her fluid in her belly. How rapidly will her health decline?

It's very hard to say, it's different in all cats, however I can say soon. Wet fip is pretty fast moving :(

She might start not eating much any day, or in another week or so.

Then it's a matter of days to a week.

Is there anything I could have done to prevented this?

No there is nothing you could have done to prevent this. Some cats are born carriers of this disease based on what I have read in other threads on this board..  All you can do right now is give your baby lots of extra love and attention for the time she has left.  Enjoy the time you have left together and then make the very difficult decision to end her suffering when she no longer has a good quality of life.

Is there an update on this little kitty? I'm curious because my cat just died of FIP. For something that seems so uncommon, I've been hearing a lot of cases of it. Scared it's possibly caused by the food we're giving our cats? My cat started decreasing food intake until he had a high fever then didn't eat at all. With your cat eating so much, is it possible it's a tapeworm?
