It lasted 30 seconds or so. I rushed him to the vet, they're doing blood work etc and giving him anti-nausea and pain meds. They're not sure what caused it at this point. He's dehydrated and they're giving him fluids.

It was so scary. I was freaking out, scared I'd lose my baby. I trust his vet very much and the vet's office has been amazing with Comet and with me and my overprotectiveness.

They're thinking it may be epilepsy. Anyone else dealing with this? What is it like? Meds, seizures, what will his quality of life be?

A scared Laura and a sick little Comet

I don't have personal experience with feline epilepsy. This article may help explain it a little [article="22453"][/article]

I hope Comet feels better soon :hugs: :vibes:

How old is Comet now? Seizures can come about from other conditions, not just epilepsy, but I guess the vet has taken all factors into consideration. The good news is that most cases of epilepsy are treatable and that once they find the right balance/dosage of meds for him, it shouldn't affect him too much. Do read the article @Columbine  linked to. It's short and concise and gives a good overview.

I hope other members with epileptic cats will chime in. It's never easy to discover that your sweet cat has a chronic condition and you will go through a period of adjustment. Let us know how it's going.

Hi. Have they ruled out underlaying causes for the seizure? Did a complete blood profile and such? Seizure can be a sympthom of something else, ranging from blood sugar irregularities, liver problems, brain tumors and so on. So before the final epilepsy diagnosis is set, its a good ida to have a complete check up.

When you get the epilepsy diagnosis on you pets its normal to have tons of questions. Will I lose my cat? Can anything be done? What can be done? What about quality of life?

The last 15 years I have been active with several support groups for canine epilepsy, as well as leading one in my own country. We get quite a few people in ,that have epi-cats as well!  Felines arent that different, but unfortunately its less supportgroups for it, and they are less active. Dont hesitate to join a dog one. A lot of the general info and support applies regardless, and the people on those lists are truly amazing. My favourite is the one youll find on http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/. They also have a info section about cats. ( http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/felineepi.html )

Epilepsy doesnt have to be a death sentense. Not at all!  And I stress this because due to vets thinking people cant be bothered, or because they lack the knowledge themself, some vets actually give really bad advise on this. Actually most cases of idiopathic epilepsy is quite manageable on medication. It may take time to find the right medication and the dosis, and through this process your cat might experience side effect and also the occasional seizure. But there is a big chance you'll get to a level of controlling the seizures, that you and your cat can live happily with. Sometimes the pets dont get seizure-free, but the seizures can be kept at a level, where its acceptable :) I also recomend giving something to protect the liver, once you start on meds. Feline milkthistle for example.

Epilepsy does NOT have to stop your cat from enjoying a long fullfilling life! :) Keep us posted!

First just like in humans epilepsy is not determined by a specialist until there has been more than one documented seizure. I am epileptic and I got all freaked out Friday because Norville had his vaccinations (feline leukemia and rabies) , it s only his second ever rabies and last time wasn't so great either. About 3 hours later I thought he was having seizures and called. They just had me give him benedryl since he was conscious even though he looked like me when I have a grandmal.  If it was a seizure though, it definitely could have been caused just by dehydration even. If your little one does have seizures though there are meds that don't cost much you can use for them. I have a friend that the vet gives pedi dose anti epileptic meds to for her cat and she gets it from the pharmisist. Cost her less.
