My wife and I rescued 4 kittens a bit over a year ago. They were born in our barn, the mother and father were both wild and the mother appeared to be very young. She had no idea what to do with them. We watched and she was just way to young to understand. She did however keep moving them but kept to the barn. She would leave them for hours and return and groom the but didn't feed them. We were able to get them finally. About a day or day and a half after we got them their eyes started to show signs of opening. One kitten was lost. The vet was unable to determine why it died but it died maybe a week after we got them. We bottle feed them and did everything and they have turned out to be great cats and we still have them.

One of them however has always had an issue that has bothered me. We found even during that first week that is would have what looked like coughing spells. We were concerned that it was the way we were feeding it because although we have always had cats we have never had any this young. We played with the formula we were giving it but nothing worked and it was only this one kitten. All of the others were fine.

That was from the first week in August of 14 and it still does it now. Money is very tight now that I am unemployed so we have not been able to take it to our vet.

I will do it several times day and night and will even wake up from a sleep doing this. It always recovers but I need to know what is causing it. I took a video yesterday of it doing this but after I joined here I have noticed this forum doesn't have the option  (that I see) to upload a video which is a bummer. I don't want to upload to Youtube. But can anyone give me an idea of what could be causing this? It seems fine afterword's and not bothered by it. But while it is happening he sounds like he is choking on something. I can say he seems to be much more active in cooler weather. Not as active in warm weather and although it spends time outside he wants in more in the summer. Not sure if the two are connected but just an observation.

Yes it looks just like that from what I can tell. The description fits. I wish I could upload my video but yes that could very well be what it is. Need to get him off to the vet.

My little Oliver (he and his brother are in my avatar) had the feline herpes virus when I got him at 8 weeks. The vet said it's basically like having a cold, but like the human version the virus never goes away, just lies dormant for the most part. It affected his eye at the time. He coughs occasionally, not very often though. Now my Lucky was having daily (multiple times a day) coughing fits. I was so worried it might be heart failure, but it was just a cold in his case as well. A course of antibiotics and he was great again. He still has an occasional coughing spell (like Oliver) but nothing like before.

Definitely look for a low-cost vet though. Or even call various vets and explain your situation.
