Hi,I'm Aria and i joined this site cause just to ask what should i do with my cat. I've had him since 2011 i think. This week, he suddenly started to lip smack constantly and when i give him food like fish he eats it happily then vomits after then stopped eating it which makes me very worried. The worst thing is that there are no vets around here. What should i do? Please help.

Licking the lips and vomiting after eating are classic signs of nausea, but it can indicate other medical issues as well. Only a vet will be able to diagnose the problem and prescribe medicine to hep your cat feel better.

Where do you live where there are no vets?

There's a recent thread about online "ask the vet" type web sites: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/308314/best-ask-a-vet-site There are some suggestions there on good web sites. Keep in mind that there's only so much an online vet can do. Your cat needs to be physically examined by a vet and have blood work done.

Thanks so much! i'll look into that. i live in a small district where pets store are not common.(1 pet store and 1 fish store) so there isn't any vet. Another thing, do cats become healthy after they eat grass? (it's medicine right?)

Grass is not medicine for cats. There must be a vet somewhere where you live.  Where do you live?

Hi Ariachan, welcome TCS. The fact that he's trying to eat, meaning he still has an appetite, is good, but I'm concerned that he's vomiting every time he eats. Effectively that means he's not getting any nutrients and cats can suffer long-term consequences in a short period of time without proper food intake.

Can you tell us more about what exactly you feed him? Have there been any recent changes in his diet? Does he get both dry and wet food? It sounds like you're feeding him fresh fish. That might concern some people here, however my cats in the Philippines also routinely get people food (fish, chicken, pork, sometimes cooked, sometimes raw) and have no problems with it the way cats in the US and Europe (who are used to an only canned-food diet) sometimes do.

If you are feeding him fresh fish, have you recently started buying from a different supplier or changed the type of fish you buy? If you cook it, are you using oils or spices? If so one of those could be the cause for concern. Do you also feed him canned cat food? If so, which brand do you buy?

If there have been no changes in his diet, then I think you should definitely get him checked by a vet. I looked on the map and your location is certainly remote (looks pretty, though
). You are quite a long ways from KL so I know that isn't practical. What is the nearest large city to you? Do you have a vehicle and a cat carrier to transport him?

Regarding grass.....there are some strains of grass that are okay for cats to eat and do aid digestion, but the kind of grass that typically grows around a home will make usually make your cat vomit.

All that said....this doesn't sound like a digestion problem to me. All cats will vomit from time to time (just like people) but if it becomes a daily occurrence, as it has, then there is something wrong. The only reason I ask all the questions about the kind of food he's eating is because you say it happens specifically after he eats, and because he still has an appetite. Often when a cat is sick they will lose their appetite completely.

So yes...you need to get him to a vet. Do you have any friends in neighboring cities who have vets they recommend? You need to be sure to find a high quality clinic so they will have the equipment necessary to run the proper tests. They should run bloodwork and possibly do x-rays to see if there is something (like a tumor) causing this problem.
