Hello! My kit is getting spayed this coming Friday. It is going to be done at my local spay neuter clinic. She is 8 months old. My question is regarding the pain meds. The clinic gives a pain med the day of the surgery and enough for 2 days afterwards. I'm not thinking this is enough as research I've done and pain meds from my procedures are usually a week or more. I feel 2 days after is way too little an amount. So I'm hoping for your guys opinion on it? I'm going to ask the vet if I could pick up pain meds for her. For 3 more days at least. I don't want to dope her up but I want her to be as comfortable as possible. Thanks guys.

The cats at the shelter get enough pain meds for a week following surgery. I don't know that they need them for that long, especially the males, but it's SOP for dogs, cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.

So should I try to request for more so that she has them for a week. Or should I see if she's feeling in pain? Problem is she's a pretty hardy cat and I don't think she will show much signs of pain even if she is. She gets stung by bees and wasps all the time trying to catch them. Her paw swells to just about double and she still walks on it.

She really won't need any pain med past what they give her for the surgery.  Cats are very good at limiting themselves when they don't feel well.  I've never had to administer pain meds to a cat post spay.

You're going to get different opinions on this. Personally, we administer pain meds for 3-5 days post spay to our cats. I use Buprenex. I use my judgement and treat on a cat-to-cat basis depending on how the cat acts.

I prefer Buprenex (Buprenorphine) over NSAIDs pre-op and post-op since a cat needs to be hydrated when taking NSAIDs. I've used Onsior and Meloxicam before, I just make sure fluids (IV or SubQ) are given BEFORE the NSAID is given...meaning day of surgery, the vet administers fluids (the full daily requirement) before giving an NSAID injection. Then, I make sure the cat is eating wet food the days following surgery when taking NSAIDs.

We also crate our cats post-op...10 days for females. This just ensures that if an issue does develop, we know it is not a result of the cat being too active.

I would suspect the clinic you are using is likely going to give you Onsior for post-op use. This medication is dispensed in a 3 pill bliste back and 1 pill is given per day. Very unlikely they will give you more of this specific medication if this is what they use. (I've used it off-label for a much longer duration; but, my vets knew I understood any potential risk and that the medication had not been tested for the way I was using it...both cats did perfectly fine on it.)

I'm not sure of the type of pain med they give. It is with the Newmarket OSPCA spay neuter clinic. It's a low cost clinic. My kitten is always hydrated as she has never tasted dry food (and never will haha) I feed freeze dried raw rehydrated a good amount. And some wet. In terms of crating. Ibought her crate 1 month ago so I could take time to get her used to it. And while she will go in there to play and eat cause I play and feed her in and around it she chews on the bars if you close the door. She loves to bite and she just starts gnawing on the plastic and metal. I fear she will hurt herself :S I'll probably have her confined to a small room though. Should I allow her access to her cat tree? She LOVES it and sleeps in the house part every night.

You might be able to call them and ask them what they give and how much and what they recommend for post-op recovery.

I'll give them a call. The post op instructions they give are to not allow excessive strenuous exercise. I'm definitely gonna call them tomorrow and confirm their type of pain med they give. I'm just really scared to not give her enough as my brothers cat got spayed and was only give a pain shot when she left. The next day she was in so much pain. She spent the whole day laying in the same place on the bed. She would just lift her head and look as you poured food and then sigh and put her head back down. She layed like that for 2 whole days. Only ate when we held food to her and persuaded her. It was so sad. I don't want my kit to be that sad. Granted my brothers cat was fixed at an older age (5 years) so I don't know if that makes a difference she is my first cat and I don't want unnecessary pain if I can make her feel good.
