Frothy pee outside box - how concerned should I be?

This morning I found a puddle of pee a few steps away from the litter box that had a layer of foam or froth on top. The urine was a normal shade of yellow. I have two kittens (7 months, female and 5 months, male) and I'm not totally sure which one did it but I think it was the female cat because she was in the room when I found it sniffing the urine.

We currently have three litter boxes but are planning to reduce to two since there are two that they use almost exclusively. With the exception of a few incidents where both have pooped over the side of the box instead of in the box, the cats  have never had a litter box accident.

I called the vet and was told that this isn't necessarily urgent and that I could wait and see if there is another accident. I'm a bit concerned; however, from the reading I've done on foamy/frothy pee, especially since my female cat, Pia had azotemia at 10 weeks due to some problems with her spay procedure (issue was resolved after two nights in the hospital on 24/7 IV fluids, thus far all blood/urine tests have come back normal).

Both cats are super active and are eating and drinking normally.

Has anyone had this issue before? Would you recommend that I immediately bring them to the vet for a check or is it possible that this really was just a non-health or behavior related accident? I don't want any potential problems to get worse but have spent so much on vet bills already!!

This may be a silly question... BUT are you sure it was cat pee? Yellow, frothy puddles of liquid can be bile vomited up from hungry little tummies expecting to be fed and then not so the cat vomits up the acid from the stomach. It is yellow and frothy on top. Did you smell the "accident"? :slant: IF it was pee - then you did right by calling the vet and I might not be too concerned yet, unless I am finding other accident spots. :vibes::vibes:

Hmm. Interesting. Well I did smell it and it was almost odorless. Neither cat has ever thrown up either but it was before breakfast so they hadn't eaten in 8 or so hours. Is it normal to vomit like that? I guess for now the best thing is to see if we find any more puddles and if not can assume the cats are probably fine?

OH sure!! Cats and even dogs can cough/vomit up this type of yellow bile. Some cats are more prone to it than other's and need to have some food left out overnight. I am thinking this was not cat urine and bile instead. It really is odorless. Hopefully you don't have a "pee" problem on your hands after all. :cross:

There haven't been any other incidents yet so it's looking like it was not pee after all! Phew :) Thanks for the help!

 Good news then!!! Cats vomiting up bile from time to time is nothing out of the ordinary and not a concern. If it is beginning to become a daily issue, then I would offer food throughout the night to keep the stomach acids from building up.

Hello,

I had this exact issue a few days ago. I brought my kitten to the vet and got a urine test. They said that his protein in his urine was a little bit high and that is what caused the foamy urine. They said if it continues, they will have to do bloodwork to test his kidneys because protein in urine is not a good thing.
