Hi guys, I am having some problems with my cat and even my vet has been confused.  He is only 11, I know some people think that is old for a cat but he's in good shape and most of my family and friends cats have lived 20+ years. Before the forthcoming symptoms his only other major problem was when he was a year old he had an aeortic thromboembolism and after he recovered his heart was checked with no defects found.  Other than that he did have a bat tooth taken out last year and I do remember when I adopted him that he had just gotten over an upper respiratory infection.

Now to the nitty gritty.   A couple of months ago he started display increased sneezing that eventually turned into sneezing attacks.  I took him to the vet and we put him on doxy(liquid) which didn't seem to work so we decied to dig deeper, this is when things started getting a little scary.  My vet did a head scan and they noticed lesions in the nasal cavaties so I took him to a specialist in Ithaca ny who did a few more scans and discovered he also had a tooth root abscess and a biopsy that came back negative.  This seemed liek a solid diagnosis as root abscesses can cause rhinits, the internist wanted me to start him on a non liquid form of the doxy and do it for a month saying it is possibly chronic rhinitis(most likely caused by the FHV).  Unfortnatley we had some complications from his biopsy pain meds and he got constipated then pancreatitis and all throughout this the rhinitis never really went away.  His eating became extremely fickle, he barely ate for a few days then just as I was about to put a feeding tube in he started eating, I took him back to the vets to check him and he seemed ok but when I got him home he started slowing down on the eating agaiin and I had noticed that his right eye was dilated.  At first the vet thought it might be Horners and unrelated... well here we get to why I am really freaking out.  Finally his eating got so bad(virtually nothing) that last week I had her put the feeding tube in and he didn't respond well at first so he stayed for a few nights.  She ended up testing his corneal sensitivity and said it was not really there and thinks it might be cavernous sinus syndrome.  She admits that is quite rare in cats though but overall is just kind of baffled with how things have gone with my cat.  Rhinitis usually isn't enough to get a cat to stop eating but the CSS shouldn't be causing inappatence or rhinitis either.  I cannot even find much info on CSS and am really just looking for some suggestions.  I know from an outside perspective it probably just looks like I am pushing wishful thinking but considering the symtoms just don't seem to fit I am thinking this is something else.  SHe is waiting to hear back from a specialist, I live in upstate NY near Cornell which is supposed to be one of the best in the country but getting in touch with them sometimes is difficult.  There is a parasite and a fungus that can cause some of these symtoms but he is an indoor cat and my location doesn't fit.  Just throwing this out there, maybe some one can help.  Thanks.

Wow, what an ordeal. Sounds like you've been into everything, pretty much.

Now, correct me if I got it wrong, but the CSS diagnosis is related to the dilated pupil in his  right eye? Does the vet suspect it's also related to the rhinitis and the sneezing? As far as I can see from reading on it online, it shouldn't be affecting both the eye and the nasal cavities? You also mentioned he's FHV positive. This in itself can explain the sneezing and rhinitis, I think? I just wonder if maybe you're dealing with two separate issues here.

How is he now? Is he eating ok? Still sneezing? All the tests and vet visits must have been very stressful for him, poor thing.

Well what is weird is yhe rhinitis hasn't gotten better but now that I can control his medicine bettet I'm hoping it will. You are right the css should not be causing this but it seems odd he woild get the rare css, a tooth abscess, and rhinitis at the same time. Css seems so rare I'm finding it hars to find info on it so i can research possible alternatives.
