My cat is almost a year old and has suffered from constipation twice in two months. After this last vet visit we were sent home with lactulose. The vet tech had also told me to add canned pumpkin for the fiber. So could I do both the lactulose and pumpkin, or is there another source of fiber I can use. He doesnt go in for a yearly check up for another 3 months and I was hoping to have an action plan so it maybe wont happen again.

Have you tried either the lactulose or pumpkin yet?

I've had good luck with organic canned pumpkin with my cats.

My 7month old kitten has some issues with constipation before.  The vet gave me laxatone for her. It's for hairballs normally, but they said it would help with constipation as well.   Canned pumpkin also works great - my kitten loves it and will lick it off my fingers! However, just make sure not to give too much at a time, or it can cause the opposite effect. ( No more than a spoonful per day)

Maybe you could try growing some cat grass for added fiber as well?  You can buy pre-grown grass, or they sell little kits to grow it at most pet stores.  Also, make sure your kitty is getting enough water, whether it's through drinking or wet food.

If you give him the canned pumpkin and he still hasn't used the bathroom, I would call up your vet again to ask them about it.  Hope your kitty feels better soon!

I was finally able to bring my kitty into the vet. After doing an exam they determined the enema from a week ago didnt get everything. It had gotten so bad the feces had become impacted, they did say he was not at megacolon stage yet. They anestitized him and manually extracted the rest.

After I talked to the vet and he said we would more than likely need the lactulose for the rest of his life. I also asked about a good food to have him on and the vet recommended Royal Canin Gastrointestinal, high energy.

As for right now I am going to do wet food for the next week make sure its going smoothly, then transition to the new food. We hope to make it to his yearly checkup without another trip to the vet, three seperate occassions with 6 visits total was enough, especially for his stress levels.

Oh no!  Hope that your kitty will finally start feeling better now!

We use Royal Canin Gastro HE at the animal rescue I volunteer at, and the cats who have had stomach issues all seem to do really well on it.    Fingers crossed that you make it to his yearly appointment without any further issues!
