My kittens name is Ozzy. He is probably under six months old. He was abandoned so I can't be sure how old he is. We have had him for a few months now. The first time he got sick was about a month after we found him. He would cry when you would pick him up, he wouldn't eat or drink, and he had a high fever. He would hardly ever move. We took him in and he was given some antibiotics and the next day he was acting like his normal self. After about a month passed, he was sick again. He had the same symptoms as before except he was limping. They kept him overnight and checked him for leukemia. The test was negative so she thought that he had blood parasite and gave him antibiotics. We took him home and he hasn't improved much. He hardly has an appetite so he has lost quite a bit of weight and today his gums are black and he is drooling a brown liquid.

I really don't know what to do at this point. Has anyone experienced this?

Thank you,

Melody

I really haven't heard of anything like this, but I think that a trip to the vet, possibly a different vet if the first one can't determine what the problem is and just wants to soak you for money, is in order quickly. If he is losing weight and not eating, then this is a semi emergency situation for a young cat. The black gums is a new one to me but might be an infection...the brown discharge doesn't sound good.

I'm sure that money is a consideration when treating your young Ozzy, but I think he needs to be seen quickly by a well established vet in your area. If Ozzy needs good medical attention, you don't have time to waste with some of the new big box animal care centers, which are terribly expensive and known for ordering unnecessary tests. Young cats don't have their immune systems fully working yet, so antibiotics and anti parasitic might be needed once a diagnosis is made. If Ozzy is listless and has a fever, I'd have him seen asap. At least this is what I would do based on your description of the current situation, which sounds serious.
