(Introduction) Male cat about 8+ years with vomiting issues.

Hello,

I am new here and would like to apologize for combining my introduction with a feline health problem and with that said I would like to thank anyone taking their time for reading this. I have 4 cats, 3 of which have special needs. I love animals and especially cats!

I have a male cat named Mikey adopted me four years ago, since I first got him he has always vomited... starting at about once a week and has ended up being literally once a day and sometimes even twice a day. As I found out recently the vomiting will subside for a day or two when I change the kind of food, his stool has always stunk really badly as well, aside from that I haven't noticed any other problems. He is currently on a grain free wet food poultry diet and likes to eat about every 2-3 hours a day, I was looking for some tips or suggestions as to what I should do.

I've gathered a few suggestions as to what it could be from vet techs and veterinarians alike.

-IBD
-Pancreatitis
-worms (unlikely)
-Excess stomach acid

I would like suggestions as to what I could do diet wise and treatment wise that could ease his vomiting until I get him back in to the vet for another checkup.

Welcome to TCS.  Sorry that Mickey has these issues.  It's always stressful when one of our furbabies is sick, especially when it's chronic .

Since you've already been discussing Mikey's issues with Vets and Vet Tech's and they've narrowed it down the the 4 above possibilities, what have they (and you) done about it.  All of those things require intervention. 

My first thought when you described his issues was IBD.  IBD usually requires not only strict food requirements, but also medication.  You said he is on grain free food, but what else?  Any meds?   Are you feeding an all WET diet?  Have you seen this website?  http://www.ibdkitties.net/

As for pancreatitis, same thing as IBD, meds, particularly pain meds, as this is a very painful issue, but I'm thinking it's NOT that because cats with this usually don't want to eat because it causes them pain.

You're right in that it's probably not worms or you would have seen something after four years of this going on,  BUT has he ever been dewormed?

Excess stomach acid is a possibility.  Did your Vet ever suggest giving him 1/4 of a Pepcid A/C tablet in the morning and at night?  Many of us to that for our cats.  The feeding small meals several times a day should help with that too.

So far the only thing I've been able to try is a grain free diet. I've got him to stable out some by switching up his food often, all wet foods of course because dry seems to make the issue worse - and for some reason it limits the vomiting to every few days or so instead of every day when I keep the food switched up to different brands.

I have not tried deworming, should it be done regardless?

I'm currently looking for digestive enzymes that he will like, so far the ones I've gotten locally pretty much make his food invisible to him. He won't even touch the treats either. My wife is a vet tech and she suggested we try pepcid as well but wanted me to get some other opinions before hand. He doesn't seem to be in any pain but sometimes he'll meow before vomiting and has a really healthy appetite.

What kind of meds does IBD require? This is the first I've had to deal with this feline issue.

What kind of digestive enzymes would you recommend? As for the pepcid... is there a specific pet brand or I could use or just regular pepcid?

As far as Pepcid, I always bought the brand name Pepcid A/C over the counter from Target or Walgreens, wherever they sell it. Note, be sure to get the "A/C", not just plain Pepcid.   As far as I know, they do not make it for pets.  You can get it in prescription form,and then can get it compounded into a liquid for animals, then it's called Famotudine (sp?)  We actually get it in injectable form now for our current cat that needs it, as she is impossible to pill. 

For the deworming, if there is a possibility that he has worms, then I would deworm him

For digestive enzymes, I use Prozyme.  It only takes a teeny tiny amount per serving of food.  I stir them into the food, not sprinkle them on top.  But Prozyme does make them for pets.

Hi JEason.I'm sorry your kitty has been vomiting for all that time.No fun for kitty.Famitodine which is pepcid AC just the generic form 10 mg tab are just the same.I bought the pepcid brand too like MRS GJ.Both brands no matter what you get are very bitter.When you pill a 1/4 tab only of pepcid I used to wrap it in a pce pf pill pocket,roll it into a ball then down the hatch.Always after a 3-5ml water chaser to help it get to the stomach which is a long way.never dry pill a cat.Your GF or wife should know this being a vet tech.What is it that your kitty is vomiting? liquid foam.Green liquid.Food digested?Food undigested? Maxwell would puke foam white.I used to give him 1/4 tab of pepcid very late at night after all meals before bed.It helps the accumulation of excess tummy acid.it is not for nausea.have you seen this cat vomit hair ever? A hairball I mean? you could try laxatone (petstore)Or what your vet tech carries at the vet.It is usually a gel which you squeeze out like a1" strip and rub into kitties front leg is she won't lick it right from the tube.With Maxwell if i didn't rub it right in later I'd find it on my ceiling. IBD is only diagnosed via a biopsy.you can try foods that are like I/D which your vet tech should have at the vet store.have you tried foods that are for sensitive tummies?I'm hoping your feeding canned as if it is IBD no dry period.How are kitties bowel movements? Are you there to see she is pooping fine.This can also be happening.Constipation.But for 4 yrs it would have progressed.Usually ibd kitties which I belong to a group do not just vomit they have major diarrhea.Any diarrhea.I know you said foul smelling poo which isn't that great but could be food related.Look at the thesse & the other link provided from the other members have given you.Also you can dr.google IBD symptoms in cats.What does the vet say? Have you had regular BW & urine testing all these 4 yrs?

There is slippery elm bark which I had a friend who's kitty just wouldn't stop throwing up.Lasted for yrs as  well.She tried SEB & said her 15 yr old boy was like a young boy again.It does have diuretic properties in it.So hydration needs to be monitored.As well with some cats it can elevate blood calcium.

Thank you for both for the replies, to answer a few questions; his vomit is mostly digested food and his problem isn't hairball related. My wife did not advise me to dry pill him and I have never done so. When he first adopted us, we had him checked out at a vet and he came back clean, we were worried because he was abandoned and without claws. He also has ears that haven't healed correctly (the vet assumed from fighting with other cats.)
We are currently talking to a feline specialist/vet tech and have plans to see an actual vet in a few days. The first vet visit he has ever had reduced his vomiting problem to diet and when I had switched his diet over to a wet based grain free diet the problem all but went away entirely. It would happen maybe once to twice a month at best.

Now he is vomiting once a day and if I'm lucky once every two days. Like I stated above, switching his food to different types and brands will ease the the vomiting a few days but it usually happens again.

Hi JEason.Thank you for the update.That sounds like a really good idea.I wanted to send this link along about IBD & kitties.Since your baby is 8 yrs old & has been declawed etc i just want to say Thank you for bringing him into your Life!!!! Truly that is wonderful as the fighting you can surely see he has no defenses against anything.I'm hoping this new set of eyes will come up with a plan.Usual first diagnosis if after diet has been tried is an ultrasound of the gut.Looking for inflammation in the 5 layers that make up the small intestinal wall.Usually a radiologist does this.Normally.Here is that link & pls do keep us updated.My boy had that they called it ileus.Or slow emptying gut.Caused by inflammation in the gut.He was put on pred after it got so bad he went off food completely.I syringe fed him for three months.I'm hoping you have caught this early enough which sounds like it and this new vet will have some insight & plan for your Boy.Here is that link from Manhattan Cats..Pancreatitis if they decide to do an US have them look all over including kidneys,pancreas,liver etc.A specfPL is a special blood draw looking for possible pancreatitis.HTH.Also reading further into your emails most IBD kitties do have to go onto Novel protein foods.Odd food like bison,venison,rabbit etc.They usually stay away from the poultry family & some stay away from the fish family as well.I do belong to the IBD group at yahoo but cannot recommend them.Great no dry pilling as a lot of people are unaware of it.Good Job!!!!
