Hi, I have a four month old kitten. Two days ago, she threw up twice, a few hours apart. At first, it was just food. Yesterday night, she had a bit of diarrhea. This morning, she had diarrhea again and also kind of threw up but mostly it looked like spit and a piece of plastic from a plastic bag? She has been going through our box of plastic bag, even though we try to keep her out/hide it. The other thing is that we just got her two weeks, and we TRIED slowly transitioning her over to a wet food diet, but as soon as she got a taste of the wet food, she refused to touch dry. A couple days later, we started very slowly giving her a couple pieces of raw meat each day.

I don't know if her diarrhea/throwing up is more related to the plastic or to her diet change? Should I be worried?

Welcome to the site! :hugs: and glad you found us!! Yes - I do think you should be concerned. Do not wait and get your kitten to the vet immediately - today. Your kitten obviously has chewed up and eaten/digested plastic bags. We do not know HOW MUCH either. Diarrhea and vomiting up plastic is a warning sign and your kitten needs to be checked out. Probably an xray is in order to see if there is a blockage or a possible obstruction in the intestines. PLEASE keep us posted on your little one. :cross: :hugs: :vibes: :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

To be on the safe side, because you've seen plastic and the symptoms have persisted for the last two days, a vet visit is recommended.

Thinking of you & your kitten, sending vibes that all is well :vibes:

I would of taken the kitty to the vets and asked for an x-ray with contrast fluid, to see if everything passes through the system like is should. A four months old, is still fairly small, and they can become dehydrated so fast if they have diarrhea and/or throws up. The vet can easily see if this is the case, and give her some fluid if needed. I wouldnt gamble that its just the food. Hope your little one feel better real soon :)

I definitely agree your kitten needs an xray to check for blockage asap- better to be safe than sorry!

Kittens cannot be trusted! One of my kittens recently had to have an xray, he had ingested potting soil, the partial tip of a norfolk pine and a piece of a shiny cat toy:-(

Hey everyone, thank you so much for the input! She's still acting normal, playful, energetic. She's also eating as normal. I checked her litterboxes as soon as I got home from school. There's some evidence of bowel movement, not as much as normal, but it's not the end of the day yet. I've decided that if she throws up again, has more diarrhea, or if her behavior changes I will take her to the vet asap!

And junior cats (at least ours, who are now more than two years old) can't be trusted, either! All the plastic bags, rubber bands, and twisty tie thingies are either thrown away or locked away.

As for the food question, it sounds like the switch was long enough ago that it's not what caused the vomiting. And I think it's great, @elliot, that she only wants wet food! Feeding some raw meat is fine, too. If it's just plain raw meat, though (meaning just meat, without supplements that cats need) it shouldn't be too much of the diet. I think the figure is something around 10%. Our cats eat and love commercial raw food so you might want to look into that if your cat continues to like the raw meat.

Good luck with the bag!

So it's a new day. Arya hasn't thrown up since I last posted and her poop isn't diarrhea consistency, but it's not firm as usual either. There's been less poop too though? She also wanted a lot more food yesterday and today, but I'm not sure if thats just because she's still a kitten. She also started doing this thing yesterday where she starts trying to drink water from the sink, even though she has a full bowl of water ? Other than that, Arya seems to be super active and cuddly as normal.

Glad to hear Arya is doing better. My cats always have dry food and eat it with no problem and at night I give them a can of wet food. Mine may sometimes throw up or get diarrhea but it goes away.

I'm glad to hear things seem to be getting back to normal! About the water drinking: it's a cat thing. Our previous cat preferred drinking out of the bathtub spigot and the cats we have now love our new bathroom sink faucets.

Yup! It's a kitty thing with the sinks and sink faucets. Glad to hear that Arya is still doing really well. :bigthumb:
