Goodness! That is a big family. So sorry you lost one.

Have you weighed them yet? With 7 there is sure to be a runt or two. The best way to know is by weighing daily at the same time. They need to gain 6-10 grams each per day.

Do you have KMR and a syringe on hand in case you need to supplement?

How's mom doing? Is she nursing well and cleaning the kittens?

I haven't weighed them yet but am going to get scales and supplies today. She is a great mother and is feeding them well, there are 2 runts a cream and a ginger but both are very feisty and certainly show the others they aren't weaklings. Will put up weights later on. Saffy has quite a lot of discharge on her back end so am quite concerned but the vets said it's normal?

Yes, spotting is normal for a few days. Is it just pinkish discharge, or something different?

Do keep an eye on the runts.

haha yeah the little cream guy on the far left in pic above is half the size but is always suckling and really fights off the others.

Yes her discharge is pinkish, but it does soak her whole back end. I guess after giving birth to 8 there is going to be quite a lot of after birth?

I'll get some more piccies up soon, I love watching them sleep how they just jolt and jerk so funny.

Goodness! Soaking her whole back end? That should begin to lessen soon. Please keep an eye on this. Sounds like a bit more than usual. Glad it's just pinkish. Are you putting clean bedding down for mom then?

I'm anxious to see weights on the babies. Is mom eating well?

I'm worried, things don't seem normal to me.... Saffy is not her usual self, she has growled and hissed at me when I picked her up twice today... this is VERY unlike her, she must be in severe pain.

She passed a bit pool of reddish pink blood with a big clot in the middle and it stank, not really rotten but it wasn't pleasant? Is she going septic? Oh god I'm freaking out!
Her appetite is very low but I did coax her into eating some food... babies seem to be sleeping lots and not really crying so I assume they are well fed.

I'm taking her to the vet first thing, I am thinking she needs antibiotics? I also weighed all the kids and these are their weights...

Runt cream boy - 81g
Big cream boy - 130g
Dark ginger boy - 104g
Light ginger boy - 79g
Mackerel tabby girl - 101g
Blue classic tabby boy - 104g
Blue torbie girl - 116g

She definitely needs to see the vet ASAP. And yes, she probably needs an antibiotic, but if they can't stop the hemorrhage, she'll need a spay.

She should be very hungry and eating lots to make good milk for her babies and recover from birthing, so it's good you've noticed she is struggling so you can get her to the vet.

The babies may need supplementing while Saffy is recovering, so I hope you have KMR and a syringe now. The two runts will need supplementing regardless - 2 mL's each every 2 hours.

Ideally, each kitten will double its birth weight in the first week.

Please let us know what the vet says and how everyone is doing.

Thanks guys for the support :)

Well Saffy is apparently fine and does not need antibiotics, the vet said the discharge is normal especially for such a big litter, he said suckling induces oxytocin release in her body making the uterus contract and shrink, so anything within it is expelled. He said discharge for up to 6 weeks is normal?

I weighed the kittens again this morning and yes they have all gained weight in only 12 hours. I didn't record it as I will do it the same time daily.

Her appetite is there and she is eating a fair amount but nothing like when she was pregnant.

I have di-vetelac baby animal milk replacer but they refused to eat it? Is this normal? does this mean they are getting enough from Saffy?

We'll only know if they are getting enough by their daily weight gain, which needs to be 6-10 grams per day.

I'm glad Saffy is okay. I've not heard of a cat bleeding up to six weeks or having discharge for more than a few days following birthing.

I do think you'll see her appetite pick up again soon though.

I'm not familiar with the brand of KMR that you mentioned. They won't drink it voluntarily while mom is around. It has to be syringed. Is that for all baby animals or just for kittens?

Well kids are all doing well and so is Saffy. I have a question though.... One kitten has it's eyes open? Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal. Some open early, others late. Sometimes one eye opens before the other. It's all good :).
