Someone we know went to a shelter recently, as well as being over run with kittens they also had an immense amount of black cats. Apparently due to superstition people don't want black cats! I couldn't quite believe it - is this the case in other countries? Would you avoid getting a black cat?

Oh heavens, no. One of the best cats in our family was Hydrox, the Old Coot, who was our black cat. He came into our family at around  five weeks old and died at 20 from complications from breast cancer. He was a great cat and we loved that boy dearly. The stories I could tell you about that boy....

Well, I just recently grew out of my cat allergy and although neither one of my cats are black, I certainly wouldn't turn one away. A friend of mine has a black and white tuxedo cat that I'm always threatening to steal because he's such a sweetie. The first cat I ever fell in love with was black. I was four years old, and a cat had kittens in my grandmas back yard. A tabby and a black little girl named Sassy. I loved that kitten. I would play with her all day. That's how we discovered I was allergic, I came inside one day with a puffy red face and watery eyes. I was devastated. :(

I think it's a superstition thing with the opposite being true as well. I found a white cat and advertised it
For adoption and that cat got adopted out in 10 seconds.

...and my very first cat was my black cat Hexie pictured in my avatar. He would have freaked out the superstious ones because not only is he black but his k9 teeth were too long and made him look like a vampire and he had six toes.

I would love a black cat, black cat is beautiful. I am not that superstitious person I heard too many bad comments about the black cat but they are wrong. Black, white, orange or whatever color,  they are all the same, sweet and lovely cat. Too bad I am only allowed one cat for now, otherwise I would adopt black cat.

I have a black cat - my darling Asha :heart3:

I had a ragdoll mix black cat when I was growing up too.

Both were/are wonderful. I'd never pick or reject any animal on the basis of its coat colour. The individual is what matters to me

Heavens no!  One of my first pet cats was solid black.  I was only about 8 years old and I loved her before I ever learned of the superstition, which I've always thought of as kinda stupid.  Then as an adult, I wanted a black cat and I got him.  Sammy, and his brother Garfie (red).  I can be superstitious in some small ways, but not about black cats ever.  I so wish this superstition would just die a quiet death.  I love black kitties!

I worked at a shelter and some of the most beautiful cats were black. I would not avoid adopting one. Maybe someday I will have one I think they are beautiful.

I live in Germany (a Catholic area) where we have great difficulty finding homes for black cats. In the UK, black cats are not only beautiful but often featured on Good Luck cards and tokens. Funnily enough, there is another school of thought in the same area whereby black cats are unlucky.

Here, they are usually considered to bring bad luck. It will be a red-letter day when I find new homes for all 5 black feral kittens I have tamed and am now fostering. Fortunately, there are some local people who can appreciate the fascinating and handsome features of a black cat.

By the way I own 2! One was by choice and the other just never found an owner.

I have had many different colored cats. The smartest one of them all was a black and white tuxedo. He was my soul mate cat and has been gone ten years. I miss him more every day. He did so many things that cats are just not supposed to do. I am not superstitious and I am glad. I am a better person for having had that black and white boy in my life.

I specifically went looking for a black cat when I was ready to adopt, because I'd read all the stories about it being tough for them to find homes.  We ended up adopting an all black female and two black and white tuxedo boys.

I rescued Maxicat who was heading to euthanasia, because shelters/rescues refused him in several cities because he is black, asthmatic and therefore considered "unadoptable". Well their loss/ my gain. We love him

I have a black cat named Casey.  He was in a cage at the pet store when we went to get food.  There is a rescue that does adoptions out of this pet store. We had already adopted one cat from them at another location. We did not know it when we saw him but his siblings had been adopted a couple of days ago. We always go by the cages and give the cats some loving.  Well he started meowing at us so my hubby stopped to pet him.  We went to get our cat food and he continued meowing.  One of the employees was an adoption counselor for the rescue.  She took him out of his cage to give him attention and brought him up front to the check out.  My hubby put the bag of cat food down on the counter.  Casey ran up my hubby's arm and perched on his shoulder.  He was 7 weeks old and he came home with us that night. We did not even have a carrier with us and had to buy a new one to take him home.  We have had him a little over a year now and he is still my hubby's baby.  He is affectionate with me but he is definitely daddy's kid. Every night when my hubby goes to bed Casey snuggles under my hubby's chin and purrs his little head off. He drools all over my hubby when he is cuddling. He does this for about 30 minutes and then moves to his sleep spot for the night. He greets my hubby every night when he gets home from work. He will come and climb all over me to get attention sometimes when hubby is a to work and he drools all over me purring his head off when he wants to cuddle. He has always drooled on us.  We are so glad he choose us.  He is our 4th and youngest cat.  He gets along really well with all 3 of our other cats.

I've never chosen a cat based off the coat/coloring.  I've chosen based off meeting with them or they have come to me.  I don't understand why people aren't drawn to them. They look like mini black panthers!

Yes I would and have owned a black cat before. However you're preaching to the choir, so to speak. We're all cat people here and are more likely to disregard stereotypes. The general public is probably a different story.

I have a black cat and I wouldn't trade him for the world (I also have a Maine Coon that I love equally!).

This is Keeker shortly after I got him at about 6 weeks old. He was literally on death's door and was going to be killed by someone who didn't want him.

This is Keeker now at ... he will be 18 months Wednesday!

I've had 2 black cats, Gem and Toby, both females. I got Toby, who was 10 years old when she came to live with me, after Gem died.  Gem was a beautiful, sleek medium to long haired cat that looked auburn in the sunlight, but black in every other light.  I loved both of those kitties very much.  Toby had severe renal failure and I made the decision when she was 12 to euthanize her because she was so sick.  I would get another black kitty in a heart beat.

Just like with people, it's not their colour that matters, it's what's inside that counts :)  To reject a cat because it is black or any other colour would be the same and rejecting a person based on their skin colour.
