I recently posted about brining a kitty that we found to the shelter. We ended up keeping him & just got back from the vet to find out he is feline lukemia positive :-(

What do we do now? The vet is sending the blood out tomorrow as a seperate test to confirm. He is a year old & we are totally heartbroken.

My heart goes out to you. This is not an automatic death sentence, some cats can survive for years if they have a strong immune system, or are a carrier. None of us know how long we will have with our loved ones, human or animal, so just love them as much as you can in the time you have left. Remember, it is always 'quality' of life. not 'quantity'. I would just love and care for him as long as he is feeling good, you'll know when the time comes and he is ready to let go. If he is not outside, he will not be exposed to as much in his compromised state. I know the helplessness you are feeling, it is not fair that this poor baby has to go through this. I also want to thank you for giving him such a wonderful home, and the care and love you are giving, I can't imagine what his life would be like at a shelter, especially now. I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers, all the luck.

This happend to me. I have two indoor cats and took in one of my outdoor kittens. He tested postive for Feline Luekiama when he was about 2 months old. He ended up testing negative 6 months later but I proceeded as if he had it because of my other cats.

He was adopted by one of my friends without any other cats.

I did a ton of research when it all went down and found similiar advice and stories that Feline Luekiama is not an automatic death sentence. I read that they can live 3 years to 20. Really depends. It sounds like a lot live normal non painful lives. They just need to be the only cat.

So for you it is about getting him adopted to the right family. I would look on facebook places to post pets for adoption in your area. I know ny has a ton of groups on facebook for this. You can visit local vets to see if they will let you advertise this kitty up for adoption. There is also Petfinder online too.

In the meantime can someone foster the kitty so you dont have to worry about your other cat?

Good luck and thank you for helping this kittle guy.
