Hello everyone,

I have a problem and really hope you can help me.

My sister and my mom have adopted a 2-months-old kitten from an animal rescue. At the time they helped us to decide saying that she could not be with other kittens as she was always fighting them and a cage is no place for any animal. We took her in despite the behaviour that was described to us specially because we didn't have any other animal in the house and hoped she would be fine.

Her name is Luna by the way.

Luna was found in a field and spent a few weeks at the rescue (I believe). We know she was a bit sick when we adopted her but as soon as she got better it all started.

Luna bites and scratches and makes it almost impossible for us to touch her. The only moments we can touch or pet her is as soon as she wakes up or when she goes to bed with my mom and starts sucking her blanket before they both fall asleep.

Luna may attack us any moment without us doing anything really. She has been with us for 2 months now and the behaviour doesn't change. We thought it was because she was scared of new house, new people, new... everything but after 2 months I don't understand it any more.

Any tips to educate or train Luna are really welcome. I cant imagine in a few months when she gets bigger how much this will hurt :S

Thanks

Here is a link to a video series that helps to socialize kittens.  It is a 3 part series that starts with the rescue of the kittens and moves through their socialization.  It has lots of great tips.

The best advice I can give is to always sit on the floor at her level.  Don't loom over her.  Sit quietly and offer yummy treats.  Talk softly.  Don't try to grab her or force her to be pet.  That will only frighten her more.  Yet do work with her every single day multiple times.  She is at a critical age.

Also be sure to not use your hands, arms or fingers as a toy.  She will associate them as one and want to use them to scratch and bite.

Once she is more comfortable, you can make a "pointer petter" that might allow you to start petting her.  I have used it on many feral cats.  It allows you to touch them from a distance and get them used to touch.  After a bit, you can then move to using a shorter pointer or using your hand.  Here is a picture of me using one on one of my ferals.
