Hi!  My name is Rebecca, but I answer to Bekki, Bek, and Aunty Ban (long story).  More to the point, and much more importantly, my cat's name is Hekitty.  She's named after the Greek goddess, Hekate, but with the "Kitty" twist.  She's very well aware that cats were once worshiped as gods, and finds the modern ignorance of that fact deplorable.

Hekitty is seven years old, as opposed to my sixty-two, but she is by far the wiser of the two of us.  I have that on the best authority...hers.  When in doubt, do what the cats says.  I've learned that the hard way.

She's a lovely girl, and I willingly give over ownership of the house to her.  Gotta love that Kitteh!

I'm looking forward to reading, learning, and perhaps making new friends.  Hekitty is looking forward to yet another area of my life that she completely dominates

.

Thank you all so much!  For my sins, I just adore those torties and calicos.  Sadly, the people at Cathouse on the Kings tell me that they are the hardest cats to place in forever homes.  I sent them a lovely story my Gran told me about tri-colored cats and they are telling to people!  I'll post it in the forums when I discover the right place.

Again, thank you for making me feel so at home!

I'm also owned by a tortie. I rescued her from the dogs and she's been bossing me around ever since lol. ;) I can't wait to read that story!

Hello, I just joined this week and one of my main reasons for joining is to see what tortie owners are saying.  It took me awhile to realize that Anabel, my tortie, was "different" than other cats.  Your baby is beautiful and like Anabel, I can tell that she is full of "tortitude"!

Welcome, Coldwetnoz.  Yeah, there's no denying that torties and calicos are not quite like all the others.  Those who work with cats will tell you that they have a definite independent streak, and a whole lot of attitude.  They're not necessarily more aggressive, as one recent idiotic article suggests, but they don't tolerate a whole lot of nonsense.  The ones that I have had, and I've had a LOT of tri-colored cats over the years, are loving and affectionate, but only on their own time-table and terms.  Actually, I think that's what I love so much about them.  Cats are keen judges of character, and torties more discriminating that most.  If a torty loves and trusts you, there's a reason.

They can hold grudges.  Hekitty has been having problems with her fall allergies, and I have been attempting to spray her with hydro-cortisone spray for cats in a forlorn attempt to keep her from scratching herself naked, and I finally had to quit.  Every time I moved my arm, she took off running.  Took her 4 days to finally trust me again.  I've taken to keeping a little dab of the ointment next to the chair, and smudging some on when she's sleeping.  So far, so good.

Yes, Anabel decides when she wants to be loving, not me!  Usually when I'm on the computer and she inches  closer and closer and wants me to rub her with one hand while I click the mouse with the other.  Grudges:  She hold a grudge when I put Advantage oil on her  neck area.  I have to sneak up  on her.  She finally learned to like her hair ball medicine so now I don't have to put it on her paws.

My white and orange tabby, Jethro, is the one with allergies.  His eyes run a lot.

Thanks for replying.  I've only been a cat person for 3 years, after having about every other animal there is, including an iguana!  lol

Have you had Jethro checked by a vet?  Sometimes watery eyes can mean an upper-respiratory infection. They're usually fairly easy to treat.

Hekitty has contact dermatitis.  If she comes into contact with certain things and pollens, she itches so badly she'll strip every bit of fur right off, except for the soft, undercoat.  Although she's a beautiful tortie, her undercoat is gray with black flecks.  When it happens, I call her "The Cat in Gray Flannel Pajamas," after the Disney movie about a gray race horse.  Or maybe a steeplechaser...it's been years since I saw that movie!

I've had most kinds of animals over the years, with the exception of farm animals, although I did have a horse when I was growing up.  Dogs, cats, rats, mice, birds, fish, the odd reptile...I had and loved them all!

Jethro has had many respiratory infections and medication took care of it.  When he or Anabel get one, they sneeze so much I know it's time for the vet. But even when he's well, his eyes look irritated and run just a bit.  I have been given a topical ointment for his eyes and I use those kitty eye pads I got from Petco.  That's terrible about Hekitty scratching herself like that.  I've seen dogs do that.

I had a horse growing up, too. but I got married too young and had kids too soon and had to give her up.  The only thing I've ALWAYS had is chickens...all my life, Banty chickens.  I still raise Serama Bantams.
