My picky cat ate the 4 Health turkey canned food again! He finished all of it.

I wonder if some of the pickiness had to do with him formerly eating kibble--maybe he just needed time to adjust to new flavors at every meal.

He used to refuse Wellness turkey but now loves it, so apparently there's hope for picky cats!

In my experience sometimes cats that are only fed one type or flavor of food can take some time to realize that these other types of foods are good, too :) . It's a survival instinct, stick with what you know is safe.

My cats eat new foods better if I microwave for a few seconds.

My Chewy.com order came today.

Luckily, my cats love the Whole Earth Farms duck pate! I guess that it was close enough to Merrick duck pate. Even my picky cat really gobbled it down.

I went to a town with a Kroger store today and I did pick up a number of cans of their store brand grain free food. I'm really wondering, though, if it's pretty much the same thing as Tractor Supply grain free food. It came in the same flavors as Tractor Supply: Chicken & Whitefish, & Turkey and Giblets.

I bought a number of the turkey and giblets cans.

I feel like I've got a much better handle on what I need to do to keep the cost of the food reasonable.

Though, I'm not opposed to feeding some Fancy Feast classics, the FF classics are actually more expensive than pretty much all of the other food that I'm buying. At 60 cents a can, it's $1.20 per 6 oz, which is close to the top of my price range. So I'll save FF for an occasional treat, or if I'm in a pinch and need a brand that's more easily available.

You're right about the Kroger food being very similar to the tractor supply food. I will say the Kroger brand seems to have a bit more moisture content in terms of actual liquid when you open the can and I personally think that the Kroger turkey smells a little more pleasant than the tractor supply food. Of course in not eating it :)

I found Dave's Pet Food on chewy.com!

In addition, I found multiple other brands that looked promising. Red Barn Naturals and Nature's Logic fit my target price range and Hounds and Gatos was only slightly over.

Woohoo! Blue Wilderness chicken formula is on sale at Chewy. The price works out to $1.23 per 5.5 oz can.

I ordered two cases of Dave's Pet Food in large cans. That should help stretch the budget very nicely and it looks like good food!

I would love to get Nature's Variety Instinct, but sadly it's over my price range. Does anybody know if they carry it in larger cans?

Your boys and girls should really enjoy Dave's. Whenever I'm tight on money that is normally my first choice. Haven't met a cat yet or have suggested it to anyone who hasn't said their boys and girls don't scarf it down right away.

I decided rather than having an arbitrary price limit on my canned food, I'm going to buy a mix of cheaper and more expensive and try to make it average out to my ideal price. So, my base cheap and easily accessible food will be 4Health grain turkey and giblets. I'll buy a lot of cans of those every month. The $0.69 per can price will nicely help to balance purchasing a few foods that would normally be above my price range.

My formerly picky cat now eats almost any canned food. Today I tried rabbit and garden greens by Halo and he's scarfing it down. The only canned food that I've seen him have real trouble eating is Blue Wilderness chicken pate. I'm not sure why.

I wish that I could get into my cat's brain and understand why he doesn't like Blue Wilderness. I thought that it was maybe the consistency but Halo rabbit and garden greens is very thick and dense and he likes that. However, I did add quite a bit of water to the Halo rabbit canned food.

I successfully fed my kitty Nature's Variety Instinct lamb formula this morning.

For lunch, he's eating the Blue Wilderness red meat feast, so apparently I don't have to blacklist all the Blue Wilderness flavors.
