Thursday night I noticed that my cat Lola was acting kind of strange. Her neck was flexed and hanging low and her back legs were wobbly. Friday morning I took her to the vet and the doctor told me that it could be some kind of neurological disorder ,but that doing a brain scan would cost me thousands of dollars ,so he would give her an anti-inflammatory injection to see if it helped. He said I should come back in a month or take her back if she got worse. When I got home that Friday she couldn't eat. She would stand in front of her bowl of food and try to eat, but would eventually lay down and give up. I also noticed she wasn't drinking water ,so I bought her pedialyte and wet food hoping that would help. She was only able to eat a few bites of the wet food before she just gave up.

Today I took her to the vet again because I wanted them to do some blood tests. The only thing that came up was that she had a potassium deficiency. The doctor told me that she believed that Lola might have hypokalemia. She gave me Renal K+ gel to give her twice a day. They also put her on an IV for dehydration. She originally suggested that I leave Lola there for two days so they can monitor her ,but I declined because at that point they were charging me 3,000$.

Now she's home and I don't know what to do. I mixed the Renal K+ with her food ,but she wont eat it. She won't touch her water and she's only eaten some bits of dry food ,but I'm afraid that its only making her more dehydrated. I don't know how much longer she can go on like this. She sleeps all day and when she tries to eat when she's hungry she just gives up. What more can I do?

I'm sorry this is written so terribly

I forgot to mention that she is 10 years old and that before Thursday night she was seemed completely healthy. She did have a cough sometimes ,but that was it.

Ok that's good mine did that with problems in her back legs and it ended up being a stroke. I had to take her to a cat specialist for that diagnosis becuase the regular vet couldn't tell me what was wrong with her. A potassium difficiency will do what is happening with your kitty but the question is what is causing it. A difficiency will cause weakness and dizziness to where they can't really do anything. Did the vet give you any clues as to the cause? Was her blood sugar normal?

Well she said that believes it could be renal failure ,but she isn't exactly sure because she hasn't done radiographs, blood pressure, x-ray, or a urinalysis (which I can't afford. The only thing I could afford was the blood work) I actually don't remember her telling me anything about her blood sugar. She gave me a copy of the blood work ,but I'm don't really know where I can find the blood sugar levels.

Perhaps a member with experience with renal failure can describe the symptoms. Usually the blood sugar is listed as Glucose but if the doctor told you possible renal failure you may have the answers. how is she doing today?

I found it and it says her blood sugar is 211 which is higher than normal. Is that something I should be worried about? She did mention some things were higher because of the stress of being in the hospital.

Actually she's been doing a lot better today. Thank you for asking! She finally drank water by herself and ate more of her wet food. She's also had more strength in her neck and legs then in the last two days.

I'm doing everything I can to keep her comfortable and happy. I just pray she keeps doing better.

NancyBee, can you provide an update on your kitty?  It sounds like mine is having the same problem.  Somewhat elevated blood sugar and very weak legs.  It also came on very suddenly, practically overnight.  The vet here isn't sure what to recommend since everything else came back normal.  I'm so worried and don't know what to try next.

Hi twocatmom! Yeah this happened literally overnight. She was fine sitting on the bed one minute and the next minute she couldn't lift her head or walk properly.

Thankfully she is completely back to normal. After I posted this she slowly got better and better each day. She was eating, drinking and walking normally maybe 5 days later.

I'm pretty sure the anti-inflammatory injection the doctor gave her is what helped her get better. I'm sorry to hear that this is happening to your cat too. I know it can be really scary. :/

What kind of symptoms does your cat have?
