Hi, I really need help. My cat "cow" (see profile picture) has had a reoccurring stye her whole life. A few years ago, she broke it open and ever since then it will scab over and because she cleans herself, it will break open again. I just went to the vet today and they recommend that we keep her in a e-collar (cone) until we get the results back for her surgery. Yes, they would like to give her surgery to remove the stye. She's ten years old, and my best friend, and I just can't even imagine living without her. She's helped me through everything. Anyways, I know that anesthesia in older cats is risky and I don't know if I should follow through with the surgery. While having surgery may improve her quality of life, I may also end it and that's the last thing I want. Just thinking about it makes me extremely upset. I'm just so torn and don't know what to do. Anyone please help, it is greatly appreciated.

While anesthesia does carry some risk, as long as your cat is healthy and tested before surgery she should be ok. My cat went under at 12 for dental and did just fine. I know it's a hard decision but if this will help her quality of life it may be best to proceed.

Hi Cowlover.

I understand your concern. There is a risk to all surgeries. The key being they use gas.Make sure they use gas. Some vets are still in the stoneage using injection which is highly dangerous.Noone knows it but the people that work there.I found this out from a girl who worked at my vets over 20 yrs ago.Never knew a thing.Never went back.Yes & usually a blood panel is done & listening of the heart etc.Did they say how long she'd be under? Don't be afraid to ask all the questions.See the gas machine etc.You are the advocate for your babe..She has no one else to speak for her.

Hugs C.
