My brother and SIL went on vacation and left their kitty at home in the care of somebody who was supposed to spend time in the house. Well, the lady is a teacher and had other commitments and, as a result, could not spend as much time there as she thought she could. Essentially the woman was gone from early in the morning to quite late in the evening. The kitty was left alone for very long periods of time and she was not used to being alone so much. She is quite a pampered little girl and when my brother and SIL would go on vacation, they took care to have a woman live in the house while they were gone. So this is the first time the cat was ever left alone for such a long time.

They came home. The cat has been very, very restless. She has been peeing inappropriately; she actually backed up against a wall in the house and sprayed. (We are thinking outside cats could have caused that stress). She has diarrhea, to the point where it's pretty much very soupy. She used to spend a good hour laying on my SIL on the couch or in bed; now she'll spend about five minutes with her and then she's off and walking around. Very restless. She's actually growling at my brother, a very low growl. She's never done any of these things before. She is normally a very good-natured cat who really loves her people.

She has some kind of allergy that causing bumpy areas around her tail. An allergy shot for that seems to be clearing it up, but it's very sore.

She's been to two different vets and has had bloodwork, which has all come back normal.....as far as what my brother said. One was an emergency vet the other morning at 2:00; they took the kitty to a vet who we have seen with our furkids and he is very good. Very thorough. I like him and I trust him. He's good.

She is about 11, they think. She was a stray when they took her in about 3 years or so ago. She is spayed. She is eating OK; that's not a problem. She's actually a little on the plump side.

Could this just be bad stress from being left alone during the day, combined with possibly some outside cats on the property? And it all has upset her to the point where she just needs to calm down again? Like I said, she truly is quite a little princess and her every wish is their command. She has never been left alone all day like that, especially for a few days on end. At this point, they're doing whatever they can to enforce their normal routine as much as they can to try to give her some sense of normalcy again.

Can somebody give me some advice for the kitty? Thank you. (My brother and SIL are trying everything they can to help her. And they say they're NEVER going on vacation again!)

To me it sounds as if it is stress induced.

Have they tried getting some Feliway plug-ins? Cheaper on Amazon--but faster to get at store. I use them with Artie and it seems to work.

Other things I can think of trying are Rescue Remedy (Whole Foods or Amazon), Jackson Galaxy's Stress Reducer (order it)..

Is the cat still interested in play? Maybe they could get Da Bird and try to tire her out.

When Artie was able to eat treats, I would make a kind of play out of them. I would throw them and he would chase and eat it. This provided a way to use up his energy.

I play classical music when I leave the house. It is very soothing.

Maybe make some kind of tent where she can hide? I fold up a quilt, and put Artie in there. it seems to comfort him. Kind of like a hiding spot, but in plain sight so the kitty can watch and know people are home with her.

Maybe even a lavender candle when they are home.

Artie was a very nervous cat when I adopted him. Stress still gets to him, but he is much better. I have tried all of the above.

I also wonder if the sitter brought or had a guy with her when she came to check up..just curious.

That is all I can think of. I am sure others will chime in with better advice.

I wish them the best.

Thank you for your help with her.

They are getting Feliway plug-ins for her.

She still plays with no problem as far as I know. I'll talk to them about the candle and about a little hidey space for her.

I wondered, too, if she brought somebody home with her and perhaps that somebody didn't like cats.

Thank you Artiemom.

Your welcome! I really do hope this helps...Maybe even watch some of Jackson Galaxy's programs? He deals with cat stress, a lot..

I think he even has some videos on YouTube.

I really do wish someone else can come up with some ideas, thoughts.....

I am just thinking of what I did for my guy.

I do have noticed that Artie gets very restless when he returns from a Vet appointment. He paces, meows, cannot stay still for several hours. What I do is hang out for an hour or so with him, with classical music on, just kind of ignoring him. I then leave for a couple of hours. When I return, I notice he has eaten and is much, much calmer.

I live in an apartment building. There is always noise of some sort. Artie never lived in an apartment building. I adopted him at age 8. He had 4 homes in 3 months..not due to him, just horrible circumstances. By the time I got him, he was a wreck, but wanting love so bad.

Artie literally jumped at each noise he heard. He also ran under my bed, each time I had a visitor. And there was something about guys. He seemed calmer with women. He was owned by an elderly couple who both passed away and was taken in by onef the daughters. It did not work out for him. He was then given to the humane society. In a foster home for 10 days. In the cellar with at least 6 other cats, one having seizures. I did not care for that arrangement. I think that is what did a number on him.

I had to resort to the things I mentioned to calm him down. I researched cat stress a lot.

I think it was a combination of those things and time which really called him down. Now when he seems stressed, I pull out the Feliway.

I noticed a connection between when his stress levels increased and the Feliway ran out...

The Feliway and the Rescue Remedy helped the most.

He ignores most of the noise, and is very calm and loving with visitors. He now realizes this is his forever home.

I am sending your brother and sister in law good wishes, dealing with this.

Their kitty may just need time to re-adjust from the outside cats, the lack of company, and the stress it evoked. Just having her people back in a calming setting may be all she needs-----and time....
