Good morning!
 And Happy Friday!

We are going on our annual apple jaunt. Heading out early Saturday morning and will return with anywhere from 100 to 120 pounds of apples. I will make both chunky and smooth applesauce for Dear Richard's lunch (we stick it in the freezer), apple dumplings, some apple crisp, and then there are apple dumplings to be made. I will grab a bag of Mutsus and Granny Smith, just so I have them to munch on as part of my breakfast for the next month or so. Those are my favorite eating apples. For a good pie, I'll take a variety of several good baking apples and put them all together.

So, in honor of our annual apple splurge on Saturday, today's question deals with apples. And I know we've talked about them before, but we do have some new members. What is your favorite apple and how do you like to eat them? In pies with a scoop of ice cream? How about an apple dumpling? Warm apple crisp is decadent! Or are you a purist who just likes to sit down and munch on a good apple?

Me, I'm a Granny fan. Grannies and Mutsus (also known as Crispins) are my favorite apples. I think I eat at least one apple every day of my life. I just slice them and munch on them that way. But I'm never going to turn down a piece of apple pie!

As far as I am concerned, there is only one kind of apple on earth. Granny Smith. I like them cold and crisp. NOT COOKED IN ANY WAY EVER. I like them as is. Sometimes with cheese on the side (gouda, not smoked) or a nice sharp cheddar. Sometimes a little cinnamon (King Arthur Four has a Vietnamese cinnamon that puts all others to shame with it's flavor and intoxicating aroma). sprinkled on the slices.

it's right in the middle of apple season here in upstate New York. i look forward to this every year, as i love apples. i missed out on buying some apples in september -- long story there. but earlier this month i bought a big bag of honeycrisp seconds (at a great price), and a peck of cortlands. i had planned to use the cortlands to make applesauce, then freeze it. not sure that's going to happen this month, as i've got a lot going on right now. the honeycrisp, i'm just chunking them, piling them into a plastic storage container with lid, and leaving that in the fridge -- and i munch on apple chunks here and there throughout the day.

i still have some apple butter left from last fall in the freezer, so i won't be making that until next year. i'm just hoping to get some applesauce made this year.

i think my favorite way to eat apples is raw and in chunks, though i love applesauce very much too.

Favorite apples are either Honeycrisp or Gala.  Both are pretty sweet, and have a good crunch to them.

Best way to eat them is in a crisp.

Love caramel apples but they don't love me - too hard to bite into!

I have a ton of them in the fridge right now - I've been getting them in the market box for weeks.  I need to start using them up other than eating raw!  I'm thinking apple butter might be useful.

I rarely eat an apple on it's own but I love warm apple pie a la mode.  Also love jelly apples which only come out at this time of year.  My favorite apple is Gala.

I like apples, but I can't eat one unless I cut it up, and don't like to cut them up until I am ready to eat them and then if I go into the kitchen to prep food, I usually just go ahead and make a meal..so, I guess I really like apple juice. I can't have that either though because of my blood sugar.

Honey Crisp, Gala, McIntosh, Fuji ... I use a variety and often mix them together.

Like pumpkins, apples are a Fall staple! There is SO much you can do with them!

Breakfast: pancakes, fritters, crepes, coffee cakes, turn-overs, and muffins.

Lunch: soups, apple and cranberry relish, salads and sandwiches (grilled apple and baby swiss is awesome!)

Dinner: pork chops in sauteed apples and onions with sweet potatoes and asparagus; fried apples with a ham steak and lima beans; fried cabbage and apples with Kielbasa and red potatoes; roast chicken with apple stuffing, sweet corn and a baked potato

Dessert and snacks: This could be an endless list, but some of my favorites are pie, cake, apple and caramel cheesecake, breads, and raw apples with various dips like caramel and cream cheese or cinnamon and honey.

Drinks: flavored or spiced cider; martinis; apple smoothies; apple, caramel and cinnamon or apple, peanut butter and banana milk shakes.

I love to cook and bake, and the options are endless!

I love apples but I'm not a fan of cinnamon so I don't like a lot of apple desserts. I do love apple crisp though. I love to eat a Granny smith apple cut up and dipped in cashew butter.

I like Jazz apples for eating. My mom makes applesauce using Johnagold and Macintosh I believe.

My favorite apple for eating out of hand is the Honeycrisp.  They are more expensive than the other apples so I only get 2 or 3 of them every once in a while.  I usually get Galas for eating.  My least favorite is the Red Delicious.  I know they are really  pretty apples but they seem to go mealy so much quicker than the others.

My favorite apple dessert is a warm apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.  I also really like apple pie.  It's not really a dessert but I also like apple fritters.

My favorite apple to eat is Red Delicious.  And most anything for pies, turnovers, etc., but I'm not that crazy about adding ice cream to it or even the frosting.

I don't have a favorite, just like them all. I like to cook chunky applesauce and put it in the freezer. If I really have a lot, I might make some pies and freeze them. I just love to eat them raw, with some cheese slices.

We bought about 130 pounds of different apples on Saturday morning. We used four large bags and they're supposed to hold 30 pounds each, but we stuffed and stuffed and stuffed. I have a bag of just Grannies for me to munch on. The other bags contain a variety of a little bit of everything and they'll be used for pies and dumplings. I also like Mutzus, but they didn't have any.

I used two bags yesterday (one was 32 pounds and the other one was 31 pounds) to make applesauce for Rick. Out of 63 pounds of apples, I got 9 quarts of smooth applesauce and 9 quarts of chunky applesauce. I looked through them as I washed them and found 14 really nice smaller apples that I'll use for dumplings later on this week. I still have one full bag (not weighed yet) of apples that I'll throw into pies and a couple apple crisps this coming weekend.

When I make dumplings, I always stuff the apple core holes with some toasted pecans and some raisins before wrapping the apples in the pastry. I dehydrated some grapes again this past summer, so I have raisins to use. And then I baste the baking apple dumplings with the syrup. They are good and they freeze very well.

I really like using a variety of apples for sauce and for pies. Our applesauce has no sugar or any spices....it's just sauce. Rick likes it that way. And since I also bake with the sauce, I don't want extra sugar in the finished food. Usually when Rick opens a container of sauce for using in his lunch, he might add a bit of cinnamon at that time. We always give my BIL a couple quarts of applesauce to throw into his lunch, too. And Rick's sister and BIL will get a couple quarts as will Rick's mom. I have to make sure that I freeze enough so that Rick has it for the year; that man loves applesauce.

This all sounds like so much fun. I wish I lived next door. :lol3:

Here's a fairly random post for anyone trying to use up a lot of apples. I've been experimenting with this recipe -

http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2015/09/26/homemade-apple-cider/

I've been making it with pears though and using a lemon instead of an orange. I let them go in the slow cooker overnight and then reduce it on the stovetop before straining. It comes out pretty good.
