I just watched the movie, having "read" the audio book a couple of weeks ago. My husband and both kids loved the book. I enjoyed it but can't say I was just as enthralled as they were. The physics, chemistry and math went over my head though I have to say, I was stoked to see my boys enjoy that part so much

Saw the movie tonight, the four or us. We thought it was very very good. Not exactly like the book, but very entertaining. Personally, I thought the movie was better than the book and I wonder what it must be like to watch it without reading the book first.

Many years ago I vowed not to see the movie version after reading the original book. It just seems to be a waste of money to see the movie. I always felt so disappointed when I did.

I do not like to disappoint my imagination of the characters, settings, and details. It just spoils things for me. In addition, I know the storyline. That does not bode well for a good movie experience.

RE The Martian: I  heard great reviews about the book. I have been thinking about downloading it on my kindle.

I think reading the book results in a much more rewarding experience.

I have only done one audio book. That seems like a hundred years ago. It was an alternative to listening to music on a long trip.  I found I missed a lot; especially when the traffic distracted me. I prefer the books.

that is just my opinion. See how others feel about this..

I tend to agree, generally. I was surprised to see how this movie broke the rules. The book and the movie are different - I'll avoid spoilers! - but they manage to each be very entertaining in its own way. I think Ridley Scott just did a great job making a movie that keeps you with it. The visuals are good (3d too) and Matt Damon does a great job being Mark Watney and they actually managed to "fix" some of the problems the book had. There was only one point where we (me, DH and the kids) felt they made a change for the worse from the book. Otherwise, they mostly improved on it, IMO.

I really do think in this case, seeing the movie first and reading the book later may not be a bad option.

Ok,,,,the movie may be on my 'to do' list...

I have not been to the movies in ages. I really do want to see the new Tom Hanks/ Steven Spielberg movie about the Gary Powers incident. It looks really good. I also love Tom Hanks.
