Hey guys,

I rescued a stray a week or so ago and named her Madonna. She's had dewormer, coccidia pre-treatment, and her first round of shots. A couple of days ago I noticed she was moving around a lot less and looked a little on the thin side. The same day she threw up twice and had diarrhea. I started giving her pedialyte every 1-2 hours. The next day she had a more solid bowel movement, but I haven't seen her eat since that day (yesterday) and I've offered her everything- dry food, milk formula, dry food with water, wet food, even wet dog food and things like baked chicken and pieces of cheese. She seems to sniff and be interested in the food but just doesn't get around to eating it. She ate a few bites of hamburger this evening, but before that, she had some diarrhea that was clear and looked like mucus. I can't seem to get her to eat, either.

I don't know when I can afford a vet visit so I'm asking for some advice from you guys.

We did have a litter of kittens that died recently from stinky diarrhea and not eating- but they seemed to be way more severe than Madonna. Her diarrhea also doesn't stink as much. Does this sound like something contagious, and is there anything I can do til I get to the vet? Should I try to get her to eat with a syringe and some mush?

update: i gave her mush with a syringe, she threw it up maybe five minutes later. waited an hour for her stomach to settle, gave her 5mL of pedialyte and then 3mL of mush. waited an hour, she kept it down. just gave her 5 more of pedialyte and another 3mL of mush. i'm gonna repeat in an hour if everything goes well and then go to bed, continue pedialyte every four hours til i get up, then resume 5mL + 3mL for a few hours tomorrow unless anybody else has any suggestions.

Syringe feeding is important if she isn't eating on your own, so good that you're doing that.  What medicine is the kitten on for coccidia?  Metronidazole (Flagyl) is often given due to concerns about giardia, but this would require a vet.

well this morning she threw all of it back up about 6 am. then i got up and decided to try to get a vet appt.

the secretary actually said a check could be held til tomorrow (payday) so i got madonna in for an appointment!

the vet couldn't find any particular thing wrong with her (her stool sample was too watery) but he's treated the symptoms with meds for diarrhea, dehydration, and appetite, and gave me some special food for her. he thinks she's going to be okay!

i gave her some of the special food and she ate a few bites and is napping now.
