Hi everyone,

I live overseas and have been looking into fostering a cat so contacted a local organization.  The woman who got back to me wants me to answer these questions about cat food and I'm really unsure about what the answers are so I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on it.  I've spoken to some of my cat owner friends and they also don't really have actual figures as they said it kind of depends on the cat and the internet doesn't seem to have specific figures.

1. When you feed cat food, you will feed dry or wet food as main or equally? for what percentage of portion between them? dry: wet food= ? : ?%

2. How much of the protein contained is in the adult cat dry food?

3. What is so called high protein cat dry food? will it be healthy to cat ?

Please excuse the language errors, English is not her first language.  Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

If I were in your shoes, these would be my answers

1. Feed only 100% canned food to prevent many common health issues associated with dry food (urianry issues, obesity, diabetes, etc). If some dry has to be fed, I feel that it should be no more than 50% of the diet and extra water needs to be added to the canned food to ensure good hydration.

2. As much as possible. Cats need protein in their diet. Current AAFCO (a US regulatory board for pet foods) has a minimum requirement of 26% protein on a dry matter basis for adult maintence. In dry food I would look for a brand that has more than that amoutn of protein, probably closer to 50%.

3. High protein dry foods are healthy. Ideally the food should be grain-free with little filler junk like fruits and veggies.

Catinfo.org is a great place to learn about proper cat nutrition
