I need help trying to figure out what's wrong with Leo!  My wife and I have had our cat, Leo in our family for 6 years now and he was a year old when we got him.  Over the course of the past 6 years, we have not had any behavioral issues with him.  Recently, within the last couple of weeks, we have found that he has been urinating in places other than the litter box (i.e. the carpet, bathroom rug).  I haven't noticed any blood in his urine and he hasn't been acting any different.  He still loves our attention and still eats his food and drinks his water.  Over the last couple of months, we have added two more animals to the family (1- two year old Border Collie mix and 1- 3 month old German Shepard/Husky Mix).  I'm not sure whether he's acting out due to the new additions or if there is something more serious wrong with him that we need to worry about.  When we first got the dogs, he had to adjust to having new animals in the house, however it wasn't until recent that he had been urinating in places he shouldn't be.  If it's not a medical problem, what steps do I take to correct this behavior?  If it is a possible medical issue, what issue could it be?  Thank you for any help!

It might be behavioral because of the new additions to the family, but I'd take him to the vet to rule out medical conditions first. Cats often urinate in inappropriate places when they're ill.  One of my cats started peeing in the sink to get our attention when he had a bladder infection.

I would definitely first take him to the vet and have him tested for a urinary tract infection. There is usually something wrong if a cat is peeing outside of the litter box. The reason they pee on carpet and rugs is because in a cat's mind "Peeing hurts, so it must be the liter box that hurts me." Many cats act completely normal when they're suffering from a UTI, minus peeing outside the litter box. Cats are great at hiding pain.

If everything comes back from the vet as okay, it is probably from stress of new animals in the house. Make sure to give Leo lots of places to hide until he gets used to the new additions, tall cat trees and cat houses that the dogs can't enter are great hiding spots. You may want to give him his own room (with litter box and food) and keep the dogs away from him until this resolves.

Sending good vibes your way. I've been through UTI's and litter box issues and they are not fun! :vibes:
