In the near future I will be moving from Utah back to Michigan, either driving a rental truck, (which I'm pretty sure is what I'm going to have to do) or, if I can find a way, having a professional mover take my property while I drive my own car there.

My question is how do I get my 4 fur babies to Michigan if I have to rent a truck? My brother made a long distance move several years ago and put his cat in a cage in the back of the U Haul. When he got to his destination his cat was blind and later died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

So, I know that's not the way to go, but there isn't enough room in the cab of a rental truck for a cage big enough to hold 4 cats, and their food, and a litter box. Any suggestions??

how about 4 smaller carriers, that can be stacked. so you could have two carriers stacked on top of two more carriers on the (bench type) seat in the cab beside you -- you'd need to secure the upper carriers so they wouldn't slide off the lower ones. you use puppy pee pads in the carriers with the cats, and change them as needed. always have all doors locked with you inside the vehicle when you open a carrier to change a pee pad, as it only takes a split second for someone else to open a door just when you've got the carrier open and just out of being scared a cat can bolt out of the vehicle.

when i moved up the east coast, it was a twelve hour drive for myself and my two cats. i used the puppy pee pads for my cats. and i made sure that my cats wore collars with id tags (and my contact info) on them, just in case. we had an uneventful journey -- well, as uneventful as moving gets anyway.

how long will the drive be from Utah to Michigan? my cats did not want any food or water during our 12 hour drive, though i did offer them both. i think they just wanted to pretend that it all wasn't happening.

Are you going alone?  If you were with someone then one could drive the truck and someone else could drive a car with the cats.  We are hoping to move to NY or Toronto from Utah, and that's what I plan on doing.  I plan on using a large dog crate with a little box and blankets instead of a small carrier and having it in the back seat.  If that is not an option I'd go for the professional mover so you can drive your own car with the cats.
