We vaccinate at 6 weeks. From what I understand CH cats can get vaccinated the same as any other cat. If you would feel better about waiting until the 8 week mark that is up to you. 8 weeks has become common practice and is widely accepted. However, it is not dangerous to vaccinate at 6 weeks.

Thanks @sarthur2  for asking me.

I do have an opinion on this.

On one hand, CH cats/kittens are exactly the same as normal are, there is nothing wrong with them at all, aside from the small part of their brain that controls their balance and coordination did not close up as it should, causing their lack of balance, etc.

NOTHING different, treated as any normal cat, same life span, etc.

HOWEVER while it may very well be CH caused, neurological issues can't be ruled out just yet. Usually when one kitten has CH, more in the litter do too, to some degree.

In a litter of 5, often there are 2 or more with CH.

So in all honesty, if this kitten were under my care, I would hold off just yet. I think I would want to know that there is a better chance that it is in fact CH and not neurological.

This does mean though that he/she will not be protected from viruses, etc. so you must be very careful of exposing this kitten to anything outside, including if you have cats who may be indoors/out, as they can bring back things that won't show to them but can infect the unprotected kitten.

Kittens lose their protection given by mom (it gets weaker with weeks) from as early as 6-7 weeks, and by 10 weeks it's basically gone.

When kittens are vaccinated too early, there is a risk of the moms protection fighting off the vaccine, which then gives you a false sense of protection, meaning it can void out the vaccine.

Shelter kittens are vaccinated younger, as soon as 4 weeks old due to the high risk of infection, so that chance outweighs the risk of vaccinating too early.

All of my kittens in my rescue group are vaccinated starting between 8-9 weeks, just before they go for spay/neuter and up for adopting.

Also wanted to add in, that this baby will not always be like this, to this extent at least, as they grow they do get much more control over the shaking, etc. so this should be good to know for you :)

I thought CH was a neurological condition?

Yes technically it is, but rather than something gone wonky neurologically, it is simply an underdeveloped cerebellum, or immature at birth.

For the OP, here is a good indicator of a kitten, then how well they adapt later. The kitten is 15 months old towards the end of the clip.

Thank you so very much for all the information. I will wait til 8 1/2 weeks old. to give him & his siblings the vaccine,s which is very soon as they are 7 weeks now.. I think one of the others which is the biggest seems at times a little shakey. I will notice it occasionally, I wondered if he has ch or not because he does so well jumping & playing. but he does like to play with the runt which I named wiggles. He is gentle with him. Even gives him bear hugs.  but at times I will see him sitting & his head being shakey. Just not all the time. can this be CH as well.  Also Wiggles is eating canned food from my hand now & I'm trying to teach him to eat out of a bowl with me holding him & bowl on my lap. I don't know how to give him water though because he won't take a syringe or a baby bottle. So for now he has the liqiud from the canned food & I will try to add water to it. If any one has suggestions on how to give him water safely that would be wonderful. I thought about bottle that hangs on cage but I'm afraid he might poke himself in eye or hurt himself. I have put his foot in a small bowl of water which of course he doesn't like but he ends up licking his foot to clean it off.  thanks for  sending the videos, very helpful. Mr. Wiggles is so cute I could never put him down for this. I hold him up & move with him to strengthen his legs & now he walks & falls to. especially when he gets excited to play. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Ms.Orphan Annie.

I think you are doing a great job BTW & Mr wiggles just sounds wonderful. There are different stages of Ch as I told as per Teresa who was a wealth on the subject. The canned will provide a lot of water for him.I know Teresa would hold up Phoenix's head while drinking as his neck muscles were not very strong.

But i believe you will get that in time.Good idea with the paw as that also helps him with coordination ,cleaning & licking it off.It will all come as you go along.Yes i have heard more than one kitten being born in a litter with it.

But am no expert by any means.I would if it were my baby only deal with groups of people that all own Ch babies present & past and learn from their wealth.Their wealth being far superior as they would have had to learn all these things with little or no help.

.I'm sure they look back & know things they would have done differently. You hang in there. And yes they are so lovey I have been told. Not an aggressive bone in their bodies.Super job!!

Hugs honey,C

Hi, Thank you for your information & your kind words. I guess it is from the experienced that we learn best or otherwise it is all trial & error. I'll keep reading any information that's out there. I'm learning a lot. I have for the past 5 years fed feral & stray cats, also have taken in off the streets starving or hurt  cats & kittens got them spay or neutered & vaccines & tried getting them adopted. I'm not with any organization just try to help the cats. I have learned about upper respiratory, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism,  FIP & FIV & now for the first time CH. All because of having 2 cats that I loved & they lived to be 14 & 19 years old. I wish people cared more, like a lot of people & you that make up this sight.do. I find more & more people out there trying to make a difference for the animals. It is so nice  to see. Thank you again.

Hi Ms. Orphan Annie, my name is Teresa. I'm the woman who has CH kitty Phoenix. My friend C (Momofmaxwell) told me that you had a kitty, maybe two, with CH & you needed some advice. I would love to talk to you about your ch kitties. I've been working with Cerebellar cats for over 10 years and I'm sure I can help you with any advice you might need. Please get in touch with me by a private message.   Phoenix is doing well might I add, he is 7 now and a very beautiful, healthy 13 lb boy :) If i can figure it out, I will post some pics of him on here. Talk soon I hope, Teresa :)
