Hi, I have read on different web sites info about cats but never joined until now. A pregnant cat about 1 yr old showed up on my front door starving & soooo pregnant. I caught her,,took her to my vets, did x-rays to make sure wasn't FIP, found her very pregnant only. tested negative but did not give any vaccines as she was pregnant. that night she had 5 babies all well & hungry. I have fed her prescription food to boost her up & to ensure she would have plenty of milk for kittens, born Sept. 18, 2015 5 kittens all orange like mom. they are doing great, fat little bellies, plenty of milk from mom. now they opened their eyes & are starting to walk, one the runt can't walk shakes really a lot when trying to get to mom to drink, head shakes a lot to. entire body shakes a lot.... I thought maybe wait a week more to see but I thought I would go on line to see if something really is wrong & now from reading everyone's notes, I'm worried this little kitten has issues so I am going to do a video & take to my vet tomorrow. will post the outcome. please wish good luck.  I'm  praying for her.. I'm glad people post things or I would have not had any idea it could be something more than week because of being the runt.

Hi that is great your vet did NOT give any vaccines as CH kittens can arise. If this little one is the runt.I would take it right away.Have you been weighing the babes daily & charting any weight gains? if not even a postal scale from say Walmart will do.Just has to go weigh into grams.I am part of www.tinykittens.com here in BC & weight gain for babies as per Shelley head of Tiny kittens is supposed to double in one week. There were some babes born only around 60 grams that is small. That needed assistance to the nipple as well as supplement feeding with KMR.The bullies would fight their way to the nipple & she would not get much.I would take the little one in & if there is any way you can ensure he/she is getting milk & talk to your vet about supplementing.you can also go to tiny kittens website & it may have feeding the babe but only this group has many members with that experience & I'm sure they will chime in.Food is life.Hugs C.

...with the cats...
hi and welcome to TCS!

taking a video to show your vet is a great idea! my first thought was feline cerebral hypoplasia, which basically means poor balance. but it could easily be something else.

has this kitten been steadily gaining weight? i understand s/he's the runt, but she should be gaining weight daily too.

I have not weighed the kittens. The vet said mommy cats are wonderful mothers & I shouldn't have to do a thing.& she is. I just noticed this in the last 3 or 4 days, the shaky kitten, thinking it was just trying to get it's balance. The vet did worm the mother & did do a test to make sure she was negative the first day I had her before she gave birth.. I will call my vet tomorrow. Is it a bad thing to take the kitten away from the mother to take to the vets with it being so young? Should I take the mother to or just take all of them to vet? I never had newborn kittens before. Thank you for your help

Hi Ms.Orphan Annie.I wish that were true about Mommy kitties. Most do kick into Mother mode very well but we have had some births that required assistance right from the start.IME.I don't know if you posted how many babes there were. You probably did.We too have had to deworm some momma's that were infested with worms and there is a risk.I think though it could be possible the little one is not getting enough nourishment. And if so.it is so crucial when they are so fragile.I used to think they knew how to do it all & make sure every one is being fed but with Tinykittens .com Dorothy a Momma cat who was dumped knew absolutely nothing when giving birth nor cleaning the babes or anything. They all would have perished without human intervention.I can't answer about transporting the baby.I know Shelley just intervened with syringe feeding.Others here will be able to provide you with more pertinent information.I would call you vet as per advice.Others here could possibly steer you into the direction of possibly assist feeding the little one..But a postal scale or food  scale (cheap) digital will work fine for the little ones as well.Best to be sure IMO.Hugs to the little ones.Hoping all goes well. The key with any kitten is warmth. We use heating pads all the time as well as those hand warmers you squish placed under towels on transport.I'm sure your vet could advise & yes I agree a video would be super.Your vet should do a  thorough exam.with temp, checking the mouth etc.Hugs C.

I always bring momma and babies to see the vet. They can look them all over but it also allows them to compare the smaller one to the others. The little one may have a more severe case of CH if that is what it is. I have two wobbly kittens right now. They can stand and walk but they are all over the place. I have friends who have CH kitties who cannot stand on their own. The vet may advise you to supplement the smaller one. Good luck!

Hi, Thank you for the information. I have 5 kitties and mommy 4 are fat & bigger. mommy cat has put weight on to.  I took the runt & mommy out of cage & let baby eat without fighting through the other kittens just a little while ago. I had to keep putting her up against  the nipple, seemed like she had a hard time finding it.  the mother cat kept cleaning the baby. I made a video on my phone of the baby shaking & will call vet first thing in the morning. I appreciate all the help & information all of you are giving me. Makes sense to take them all to the  vet & I will buy a scale tomorrow as well & start weighing them. The vet was surprised all kittens lived because the mother was sooo skinny. This might have something to do with the baby. It sounds like it has CH. Baby wobbles almost uncontrollably, I just want to get her & hold her up on all 4 legs to help her out.. Didn't notice this until all the kittens started to try to walk within the last few days. I've been keeping a close eye on them daily. Thanks to everyone's postings I was able to decide this is not shaking from weakness & learning to walk. Too much wobbling. Thank you again so much.

Hi, I took my kitten to the vet & she thinks he has CH. I have been supplementing him with AD canned food along with making sure he is getting his mothers milk. is tiny but not skinny,. vet says healthy for being the runt, she can't tell if he has any secondary issues at this time & said things run in threes. will know as kitten grows if he has any other issues such as week heart etc. but for now just shakes & wobbles all over. I could not put him down & would not, I will keep him forever & adopt out the other siblings. Have too many cats so can't keep siblings. Might just keep mommy & shakey kitty. Or should I keep shakey kitty & one of the siblings. Not sure yet. Never heard of CH before & don't know quite how to deal with him growing up & if he can use litter box. All new to me. he is 4 weeks old now. Any suggestions on how to take care of him I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

There are varying degrees of CH and only time will tell to what degree your baby may be. Severe cases where the cat cannot stand up does mean a lifetime commitment to helping me them use the litter box. Less severe cases (like the kittens I have right now) don't require help to use the litter box. They just look drunk all the time. For now, he doesn't need any special care except for the supplementing but as far as care for CH goes there isn't anything you can do right now. I do home it is CH and not anything else. One of mine is incontinent and I do love him but it can be pretty frustrating.

Perhaps keep mom and shaky kitty. There is lots of information on the web about this, and he may improve with time. Is he walking now?

He should have a normal life span and be a very loving cat. I'm glad you did not put him down!

Search 'ch' on this site.  there are many members with CH kittens and there are threads about and for them.  One of my favorites  has pictures of kittens dressed to help keep diapers on.

·  Yes! I was an active member on chkittyclub for years! (chcatwoman) that was my home group!....all the friends i had there! i could just cry!... They would still know me, even though it's been a few years... I did pop in not too long ago... I used to have my own website..(chkittycommittee lol!)  just to raise awareness for ch but i had to shut it down bc when i stopped working i just couldn't afford it anymore. But Phoenix is pretty famous lol! He is the last of my ch gang (for now at least!) My mission in life was to stop unnecessary euthanasia on these ch kitties. They wind up at shelters where they are considered unadoptable and put down! It is JUST a birth defect, that's all. Not an illness nor a disease. Just a complication bc momma cat was exposed somehow while pregnant and the result to the babies in utero is usually death but the ones who make it will have either mild, moderate or severe ch. Phoenix is like a mild moderate. he cannot jump at all, but he can climb (onto a couch or a bed), get in a litterbox, chase the laser light like a maniac...he eats on his own, grooms himself, as neat as he can be pottying, social butterfly to other cats but especially people! & especially kittens!...a real sweet ham, has never raised a nasty paw, knows his name, comes when called....just a living doll and handsome as can be, might i add! I had a dream to somehow one day make mandatory pregnancy tests for stray females that owners bring in to the vets for shots. When it is not known they are pregnant and they are given the panleukopenia vax, that's the #1 way babies get exposed, in utero, from the momma getting her shots. So i thought if i could get a big drug company behind me like novartis maybe, to make this mandatory, think of how we could stamp out CH! I

Hi, Yes I am very interested in talking with her. I really appreciate any help. Thank you so much.  Phoenix is a doll. I hope my kitty will grow up & get stronger as he grows to help minimize his shaking My kitty I haven't named yet. Still thinking of something special for the little guy. He shakes really bad, sometimes he falls over from shaking so hard. Its as if he is having tremors or shivers from the cold over his entire body.  I just want to grab him & hold him still, I feel so bad for him. He does like to play with his siblings, & they are in the biting stage. but he holds his own most of the time but they do get on top of him & he kicks at them pretty good. He looks like a fast bouncing ball that doesn't stop bouncing. & sometimes gets uncontrollable & he falls over but gets back up & tries again. He still drags his back legs but seems to be getting up on his back legs more now. Maybe he's getting stronger in his legs.  His head shakes a lot while I try to hand feed him canned AD from the vet (very rich) & then he'll try to pull away..The siblings are now starting to try to eat it as well. I also purchased  canned Royal Canine baby cat instinctive for 1 to 4 months old. It's hard to get a good helping of canned food in him so I will put him with the mother by herself so he gets alot of milk from her 3 to 4 times a day. besides being with the other kitties feeding. They say there is nothing like a moms milk. Thank you again. looking forward to talking with your friend.

hi, he is starting to get up on his back legs some now , before he dragged them now he does both. Seems like he is getting a little strength in his back legs. I hold him up so he stands on all fours so he doesn't have to shake, thinking maybe that might help him strengthen his legs with out falling over. kinda like therapy & move him in a slow walk a few times a day. I don't want to make him to tired. But I think all the shaking would really tire him out.. i have him & family in a big dog cage with a lambswool bed that covers the entire floor now he is more able to get up before he would just slide on the plastic floor. On the utility floor with no carpet he slides & can't stand..

thank you for your response It helps me, so maybe he will get somewhat better maybe. Something to give me hope on for him. I think by him being with his 4 siblings it makes him want to get up & do things with them which would help him now. I guess watching him & the little I do is all I can do at this time until he grows older since he was only born on Sept. 18th.

Vaccines are not usually started until eight weeks. Let's ask @catwoman707 for her opinion on this since he has issues.

How is he doing?

Has he made further improvements?
